The Role
I have really enjoyed my time at Barclays. My colleagues have been really respectful towards me, I have been assigned a good level of work and my line manager has been extremely supportive. The culture at Barclays, particularly in BIA, has been unbelievable - it's been a fantastic place to work.
My colleagues made be feel like a valued member of the team. Everyone was very supportive and were always open to questions. At no point did I ever feel hesitant about approaching anyone in BIA. The one thing I really appreciated, was that they trusted me with important responsibilities from an early stage. This made me feel as though I was adding value to the team.
Initially, my line manager met with me everyday to ensure that I was comfortable and also that I had enough to be getting on with for the upcoming day. Though he was not always the one who was setting me tasks, he still took the time to make sure I was happy with what I was doing.
At the start of the internship, my work load was very steady. However, this increased quite quickly towards the end of the programme. By that point, I had found my feet and was more comfortable managing a large work load. It also gave me the opportunity to prioritize and reshuffle tasks to effectively manage my diary.
As I mentioned earlier, I was very shocked by the amount of responsibility I was given by the team. They trusted with important tasks from a very early stage, which boosted my self confidence. Certain projects I was responsible for within the team, gave me an opportunity to network and learn.
Time management will be the most useful skill I have developed. Being able to priortise, adjust and manage different responsibilities is something I've never had to do to this level before but will be extremely useful going forward. I will also be looking to utilise my improved self confidence to help develop my public speaking.
