The Role
I really enjoyed my time here this summer. Everyone was very open and engaging, happy to answer questions and help me. I learnt a lot and definitley feel like I want to come back for a full time position. The type of work I did felt meaningfull and I really feel like they needed me there. I was not just here to be evaluated but actually got to contribute meaningfull work.
I absolutely felt valued by my colleagues. I got to work on real assignments where I could take away some of the burden from the regular employees, for which they were always gratefull. Of course it's not all fun assignments but I was never handed something just to keep me busy, they always explained the meaning of what I was doing, and while I was doing my task they had time to complete more qualified work. To the extent it was possible I felt as a part of the team, striving together to create the best result.
For most of my assignments I was given very clear instructions both in how to accomplish my task and what type of finished product they expected. This did vary however during the summer and for some more loose projects I was given more or less free reigns to do what I thought best. Of course this is also part of a test to see how I can manage on my own and when I asked for guidance or suppport it was always given to me.
This varied quite a lot day to day and week to week. As this was a summer internship the daily work burden depends on how active our clients were and how many from the regular team were on holiday at any given point of time. On aevrage I'd say I spent 11 hours at the office. If this is a lot or not and how busy I was depends on your own preference but I felt it was always reasonable and never felt overworked or too stressed. I also never worked weekends which I really appreciated.
This developed over time and progressed as I learnt how to do more things. At the beginning everything had to be explained in detail and someone always doublechecked everything I did, but as the summer progressed and I proved myself reliable I was given more and more responsibility and more open taks, where I was given responsibility of the work I delivered to others, without it being checked by someone in my team first.
I belive the deeper understanding of the industry and its inner workings will help me in my studies going forward, especially in all my case-based courses. During the summer I also greatly improved my presentation skills and attention to detail which will definitley come in handy, both at uni and later on when I start my professional career. I also feel I got to hone my communication skills and learnt how to communicate with different people, such as seniors or my fellow interns, to achieve the result I want.
The Company
I liked the atmosphere in my office. It was a good balance between focus and relaxed. There wasn't too much emphasis placed on hierarchy which meant I always felt welcome to ask questions to seniors. It was also a good balance of focused work and breaks where everyone talked ot eachother, creating an inclusive atmosphere where I felt welcome from the start. I felt that everyone was also welcome to contribute and peole listened to suggestions and ideas, no matter who raised them.
I belive it was an overall well organised internship. It started of with a well structured trainign week where we got to learn all the essential skills needed to perform our job once we got to our teams. Once I met my team they were quite structured in the way they helped me find my place and they also took time to explain the business to me and what they do from the outset, which helped me put everything I did in context. There was some small IT issues but they were quickly resolved and didn't cause me too much headache. I think that is expected in a large organisation.
They started of with the one week of training at the beginning of the (10 week) internship. This was quite comprehensive and walked us through all the essential skills we needed to have before joining our teams. On top of this extra courses was offered online throughout the internship where we could gain additional skills in some of the programs we used in our daily work. Once I started in my tea they also set aside time to explain the business to me and what it is we do and how it fits toghether with all the other teams and departments. When asked people from other teams also took time out of their day to sit down with me and explain what it is they do.
I would definitely be highly interested in starting full-time here once I've finished my studies. I really liked the internship and the type of work I got to do. The prospect of developing in the firm and rising through the ranks is also quite appealing. It feels like a great place to work and develop and the perfect place to start my career with a reasonable work/life balance. I believe the chances of getting hired are quite good as they will find a place for you in another team if the team of your choosing isn't availible, sice they want to keep good talent.
The Culture
I think there was a fairly good social scene where we all talked to one another and were friendly.
The rent is quite expensive but food isn't too bad. It all depends on how much you eat out and how much you cook yourself. If you work late however the company will pay for dinner and they have a quite generous allowance. Cost of socializing isn't cheap, alcohol is fairly expensive, but it's not extreme, and you can definitely afford it on the salary they give you. Socializing is more dependent on time than money.
There is quite good nightlife, even though it might not be the cheapest, especially during summer there are some great bars and places outseid where you can go both after work and on the weekends. there is always people out and about and there are several bars close to work if you want to grab a beer on a friday evening. another plus is that a lot of other similar companies have their offices close by, so if you have friends in the same industry it's easy to meet up.
There are some but I wasn't really looking for it so I'm unsure.
