    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I thoroughly enjoyed working at Barnett Waddingham over the summer. The entire firm was so welcoming and there was never a dull day in the office. The socials were great, the work was interesting and the culture was amazing. All-in-all, it was definitely a ten out of ten experience in my book and I would definitely recommend anyone pursuing a career as an actuary to look into them.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • The rest of my colleagues were extremely welcoming and always open to listening to whatever it is I had to say. After a few weeks of working there, I was given numerous jobs that involved a lot of client work and the fact that they trusted me with such great responsibility instilled a lot of confidence in me. I genuinely felt as though I was positively contributing towards the day-to-day running of the company.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My mentors were very supportive. They were always there to help me out whenever I had any problems, always there to answer any questions I had, no matter how dumb they were. They really helped me smoothly integrate into the firm, making the transition into the work environment significantly easier. They were also always there to ensure that I had enough work and that I was getting on okay.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • From day one I was kept busy; with various training sessions during the first week and then with a number of client-related jobs after that. After a few weeks of working there, I was given numerous jobs that involved a lot of client work and the fact that they trusted me with such great responsibility instilled a lot of confidence in me. I genuinely felt as though I was positively contributing towards the day-to-day running of the company.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • It was amazing to see how much trust the firm had in its interns, getting us involved in important pieces of work as soon as we settled in. After a few weeks of working there, I was given numerous jobs that involved a lot of client work and the fact that they trusted me with such great responsibility instilled a lot of confidence in me. • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • Given the fact that I am studying actuarial science in university, the skills I developed and things I learnt during my eight weeks working for Barnett Waddingham are going to be extremely useful when it comes to completing the final year of my Actuarial Science degree. The internship allowed me to apply many concepts I'd picked up from my first two years of doing the degree and also granted me the opportunity to pick up some new skills that will come in handy in my final year.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • There was always a warm atmosphere at work and I always looked forward to coming into the office every morning. From day one I was never too shy to interact with anyone with the office because they were just that welcoming. When it came down to getting work done, everyone was so focused and this was extremely inspiring, but at the same time it wasn't too serious. I would have lunch with the rest of my and it was always a good time with everyone there.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The internship was extremely well organized and I could tell that they had spent a vast amount of time over the years perfecting the structure of the programme. The two induction days we had at the beginning of the internship were very well organized and provided us with a good insight into what we were getting ourselves into over the next 8 weeks and after having completed the internship I can whole-heartedly say that I was not disappointed; everything just went as planned, seamless.

The first week involved a lot of training sessions that prepared us for the weeks to come and we were also invited to additional training sessions throughout the internship.

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • The social side of the firm was phenomenal and it was great for us interns because it really helped break the ice in the beginning. There were so many things to choose from throughout the eight weeks, from the company football to the SIAS boat party, from the Great British Beer festival to laser tag or pool socials with the rest of the team. There was never a disappointing week at the company in terms of socials and it really made the internship that much more enjoyable.
