    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • The office has a very relaxed atmosphere and the people in the office are very young. However, the work is very repetitive and after a few months you have learnt everything. There isn’t the opportunity for personal development and to develop skills that will help you in the working world.

    2/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Not very, there is a lot of favouritism in the office. Placement students carry out the same jobs as graduates but are paid a lot less and do not receive bonuses. You are expected to work overtime which is rarely acknowledged. You are able to claim the overtime back through the flexi system but not in pay.

    1/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Team leaders offer good feedback on all accounts that have been produced, positive feedback is given and so are areas for development. The office is open plan therefore it is easy to ask people for help. Everyone in the office is friendly therefore are willing to help when you have a query.

    4/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Very busy. There is always lots of work to do, this can be completing accounts or doing review work. If you finish accounts early, you are encouraged to move on to the next account allowing you to gain time. Whereas, if you are behind on you’re expected to work overtime.

    4/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • Not much. Limited responsibilities were given to placement students. E-mails have to be proof read by team leaders before being sent to clients. Placements do not have their own telephone unless you are in chasing. You are responsible for your own time management and planning of accounts making sure you complete them in the time given.

    2/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • Excel skills were improved as it was used on a daily basis, new skills were learnt such as how to create macros and do v-lookups. Nothing I worked on related to my accounting and finance degree. Training was good as you were able to learn about your personality and gain an understanding of others and how they work.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The atmosphere in the office was very relaxed and everyone is very young. It is not very professional and no business wear is worn in the office. Most people are willing to help you when you have questions or queries, however there a a few cliques formed in the office.

    3/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The placement was very organised, there was two weeks of training at the start of the placement to introduce you to the systems and the work you would be completing. There was also workshops throughout the year where you would complete modules to help with development and how to improve you work.

    4/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • Training was very good, there was two weeks of training completed at the start of the placement. This allowed you to get to know the other placements and understand the systems you would be working with. After a few months of working there you had learnt all there was to know. Other training was carried out throughout the year to gain an understanding of your personality and those you work with.

    3/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Flexi Time

    Company Parties/Events

    2/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Future employment prospects are not very good. Graduates carry out the same work as placement students and are given the same responsibility. Pay is not very good and the work is very repetitive. The graduate programme is not really a graduate programme, not many placement students return as graduates in the future, if they do few stay as others have moved on to find other jobs.

    1/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • The office is very young and relaxed which is good. There was three company nights out during the placement year, all paid for by the company. These were, a new starter night out, Christmas party, and leavers party. It would have been better to have additional socials with your team or department throughout the year.

    2/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • The area is very remote therefore is impossible to walk to work and a car is needed in order to get there. At lunch most people bring their own food due to the remote area. There is a shop and pub in the village. The nearest supermarket is a 15 minute drive in the closest town. Most socials were held in the nearest city, 45 mins away, this was difficult for those who did not live there.

    3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • There was no nightlife close to the office. The nearest city was 30 mins away which was where most socials were held. This was ideal for those who lived in the city however those who did not made it difficult. The prices were good and the nightlife in the city was very good.

    4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There is the opportunity to play football on a weekly basis. There is also a fitness class held after work on site, also on a weekly basis. Every year there is the opportunity to take part in Yorkshire Warrior as a company, raising money for a charity of the company’s choice.
