The Role
My manager was great and gave me a lot of choice with how I wanted to carry out my internship. The team and everybody I worked with were all very friendly and made me feel welcome. I was given some options to go on training courses and there is a lot of training available online on the Santander Knowledge if you have got nothing to do. However I feel the structure of the programme wasn't very well done by the internship organisers and it really depended on who you got as a manager and what area you were working in. I was lucky to get put on a project and thus have some work to do, although I feel like the jobs are mainly just whatever spare tasks you can ask around to help out with so you really have to make an effort to get some work to do.
Within the project I was working in I feel very valued as the work I did helped them out a lot. Within the team everybody was very friendly and I didn't feel afraid to speak up and ask questions. It was a bit daunting at the start but as the workplace is so open it's easy to ask around and everybody generally seemed happy to help.
I was given a lot of support with what I wanted to do, however there was less guidance in terms of what I should be working on. I kind of had to work that out for myself and see by chance what kind of jobs came up
Generally not very busy. Might have one or two tasks to do a day and they were not particularly mind stretching. Maybe just time-consuming and tedious.
I was given a fair amount of responsibility in putting together weekly packs, going to meetings and doing presentations. The work I was doing was going to be directly used in projects that are going live very soon - so there was actually quite a bit of responsibility involved! However it wasn't the make or break if I messed up.
The communication and presentation skills I have learned have been very useful as I am a lot more confident now if I was to go into a business role. The project management skills I've picked up over the course of the internship will also be useful in addition to the agile and waterfall methodologies for projects. I haven't done any specific training, but have done some self-learning of SQL in whatever time I have free which may come in handy later on but that was in my own time. There isn't much applied stuff that would be useful later on, mainly general people skills.
The Company
Friendly and chatty. More so in the tech offices.
There wasn't much direction from the overall intern organsiers. And there wasn't any general intern training at the start you were just thrown in the deep end and hoped that your managers would train you for what you'd be doing.
They let me attend two training days, one of which was at a hotel in London - both were very fun and useful!
Flexi Time
Working from home
Good in terms of salaries, work-life balance and friendly fun teams.
The Culture
In one of the project teams we had a social which was a great way to meet everybody.
I wold normally be taken out - so didn't have to pay for anything :)
Bars right by work (less than 2 mins walk)
They had a community day where they went to a school but I couldn't make it. Apart from that there wasn't much going on.
