The Role
It was a very enjoyable experience. Really welcoming environment to work in, especially for an intern as people are understanding and look to help as much as possible. Throughout the placement there was plenty of training and personal development including a CV workshop, an interview skills workshop, a presentation skills workshop, and a LinkedIn workshop.
I was encouraged to set up weekly meetings with my line manager to discuss on a regular basis how my internship was going. Through this, I came up with goals and aims for the whole internship, which were accomplished thanks to the support provided. For example, I want to network throughout during my internship, so my line manager started setting up some induction meetings with other workers (from my department and from outside my department) to meet people and get an idea of what they do within the organisation as a whole.
During my internship here, I was not just given basic, typical 'intern tasks' like photocopying and data entry. I was given a project that I could lead on, while also helping out in other areas when required. However, because of the nature of the organisation (particularly that it's huge), I did not feel as though I had a great deal of responsibility on the grand scheme of things - though this is expected.
During my internship here, I think the most valuable skill that I developed was networking, specifically how to go approach people and (if that's successful) what to speak to them about. I have also improved upon other skills such as written and oral communication within a commercial environment, which I had little experience in before starting this internship.
