The Role
I gained a lot of experience on this placement and enjoyed the wide-range of projects/activities I was involved in throughout the year.
I felt like another member of my team and was given responsibilities early on. I worked with my VP multiple times and constantly felt supported by everyone in my team.
I worked closely with my manager and had weekly 1-1s. She challenged my and was invested in my growth as a young professional. I felt comfortable to go to her whenever I needed help or support.
I was in a fast-paced project environment and therefore had days full of meetings. There were a few times in the year where I had no work to do but I my days were full most of the time.
I had to run weekly performance meetings with senior members of staff and was given inportant tasks to help with the progression of long-term projects. I've had to present some of my work to key business stakeholders and have gathered data for department reports.
Although my degree is more technical, I learnt a lot of transferrable skills that will be useful when doing my dissertation. I also got to experience how the techniques, methodologies & tools in my business units were applied in a real business environment.
The Company
Very supportive and transparent. Although I was in a fast-paced environment, I rarely felt overwhelmed because I had help. Everyone was approachable including senior members of staff and it felt like the department was one large team.
I felt the placement was organised well on GSK's part. However, I didn't have the best experience with SRG which is the agency that hires placement students on behalf of GSK. There was always holiday issues, a few payslip problems and I was given the wrong time for my assessment centre which meant I nearly wasn't able to be interviewed because I was late.
I was able to go on many formal training courses that didn't always benefit my role exclusively. My manager allowed me to partake in projects outside my role and department that were more alligned to my course.

Working from home
There are many graduate programmes. However, I didn't apply for any as none peaked my interest. If I did apply, the only advantage I got was not having to fill in an application form. I'd still have to conduct online tests, interviews and assessment centres.
The Culture
I was involved in a council for placement students that organised many different social/corporate events including nights out, football clubs and a boat party. This council helped to connect students at different sites all over England and was a great way to make friends.
Cost of living seemed to be standard London prices but I was at home and therefore paid less rent. I spent a large amount of money on travel cards to get into work. As I was in London, the cost of going out was significantly more expensive than where I studied as expected.
I worked in South West London and it was easy to travel into Central London and experience the night life there.
I was able to volunteer for multiple charity events including the GSK impact awards in the science museum. GSK allows all employees 1 day off paid per year to volunteer for a charity for the day. I was also able to get heavily involved in the council for IPs and was the lead for organising an easter raffle which raised £678 for Rays of Sunshine.
