The Role
I really enjoyed my placement with Handelsbanken! I learnt a lot about both myself and the financial sector, I am going to pursue a financial career as a result. The branch staff will attempt to include you as much as they can, but as an intern you're restricted, in terms of what you can do. Although, this is no fault of the company, they have guidelines from external organisations that they must comply with.
It was like any work place everyone makes you feel as welcome as possible, but as a intern I felt like I was a burden at times. Although, I overcame this towards the end of my placement, I learnt when was the right time to ask questions and chose to note things down to ask at a later date.
Everyone was extremely supportive especially those I worked directly with in the AMS team! The instructions given to you are both very clear and important and should be followed. However, the support of the staff is equally valuable, they explained "why?" we do things. In addition, to giving me quick answers to questions whenever I asked. This insight expanded my learning over the 11 weeks!
As I said previously the company are limited in terms of what they can get you to do. It often depends on the systems you have access to, how complex a task is or how busy the branch is. Some days I would have a lot of small little tasks to keep me busy throughout the day, whereas others may have been spent working through larger tasks with other members of the team. There were days in the first few weeks where I would become frustrated when I couldn't recognise that there was something to do, although this changed towards the end when I began gaining a better understanding of daily tasks.
I was given as much responsibility as I could be given. The branches have to follow strict guidelines in order to comply with external and internal regulations. However, it would of been nice to have more access to some systems as there were tasks I was asked to do that I couldn't.
I was not from a strong financial background before coming to Handelsbanken, the knowledge I have developed will be used in my final year studies for a financial based module. In addition, I feel the skills and knowledge developed will help me in both my general life and my future career.
The Company
The atmosphere was so a perfect balance to be honest, it was both sociable and productive.
The internship was extremely organised! Considering it is a relatively new program. Although, I would have liked more opportunity to explore other area's of the bank outside of the branch. I understand what each sector of the company does but I would have preferred to be able to see these in action.
Handelsbanken give you a wide range of learning modules to complete during the internship, Its an on the job training environment. I would have liked more opportunity to engage with those in more senior roles on a one to one basis, but this is obviously difficult to accommodate given the amount of interns there are.
The organisation does appeal to me, both the atmosphere and the people are welcoming, I have agreed to return over the Christmas period. There are clear opportunities within the company, at this stage there is not a clear training plan but HR are in the process of changing this! Once this is complete I would be very interested in joining on a long term basis.
The Culture
