The Role
I really enjoyed my internship. The HR team were very friendly and planned a lot of social events for us to get to know the other interns and gave us something to look forward each week. Everything was ready for when we arrived: we had the opportunity to meet our line managers before arriving at the office which made it less nerve-wracking and the Buddies were well selected and ready to meet us and take us to our desk on the first day.
I felt very valued by my team: I had choice over the type of work I got involved in based on what I found interesting. I was invited along to team social events and made to feel like a real member of the team. The team gave me real responsibility which built up a good level of trust. I was very sad to say goodbye to my team and will remain in contact with them
Formally, there were 2 meeting points for me and my line manager: the mid-term and end of term review. These were set with a structured format with talking points for us to go through. My line manager also saw me on occassion: usually fortnightly. This was fine, however a large amount of my direction on a day-to-day basis came from my Buddy and other team members who I asked for work from.
This really varied. Most days I was fortunate enough to have team members give me tasks to do and have a constant stream. I was busy but not too stressed. However, some days (particularly towards the beginning and the end), I found some of the days, I was regularly having to search for work and ask around the team. I had some projects and online learning to do in the times where I did not have as much work.
I was given a large amount of responsibility to write official documents under the guidance of my team members. I was allowed to attend client meetings and run with end-to-end deals. Nevertheless, although my team were incredibly busy, everyone had time for me and were more than willing to help if I ever needed it.
The HR team provided up with a number of workshops of soft skills such as networking and building a personal brand as well as accountancy and excel skills. There were also sessions on how to present well, all of which were very useful and insightful. Beyond this, the technical training I got on the desk was invaluable.
The Company
The atmosphere was very friendly. Everyone was approachable and were happy to go for a coffee with me. It was very busy with work but people were still happy to give up their time for lunch or a chat and there was still plenty of fun and chatting. It gave an overall sense of relaxed but efficient.
Everything was prepared for when I arrived. We met our line managers during training in the first week which made it less intimidating once we had arrived at the office and then our Buddies met us on the first morning at the office and we had the opportunity to get to know them before going to the desk.
The firm invested a lot in us: the events and training that they set up for us were great. The training was very comprehensive and they brought in a training company especially to teach us. There was even training available to us before we joined the internship. The social events were great fun and food and drink was all provided with great locations.

I would definitely work for HSBC Private Bank again if I was given the opportunity. The atmosphere was very friendly and there are great prospects on the graduate scheme to be promoted and see all the different areas of the bank. The Bank have room for all of the interns on the graduate placement.
The Culture
We had a lot of social events to get to know the other interns which were a lot of fun. We had events organsied my HR but I got to know my other interns in the Bank through lunch and learns with a variety of senior members of the Bank and I hope to stay in contact with my fellow interns for a long time to come.
