    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I have thoroughly enjoyed my internship. Being involved with a wide variety of projects has given me the chance to appreciate several different work stages and the breadth of work here at AFE. I have learned a great deal from my colleagues through a number of one-to-one tutorials, team meetings, and discussions.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • - My colleagues asked for my opinion on various aspects of the projects, I felt involved and my voice was appreciated. - I was given a number of 1:1 tutorials to further develop my knowledge - my colleagues took a generous amount of time to ensure I understood the task -I was invited to attend a number of CPD's and activities outside working hours, i.e. social activities.

    5/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • - I was given a number of 1:1 tutorials to further develop my knowledge - my colleagues took a generous amount of time to ensure I understood the task. We discussed issues through drawing explanatory diagrams, looking at precedents - particularly for construction drawings and referred to some literature. As for the latter, I was given a certain time to find out the solution myself to then interpret the drawings which were later checked by a Senior Engineer. We discussed any issues in detail.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I had a clear 'tasks to complete'

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • Sufficient responsibility to make informed decisions. On one project I dealt with sourcing of the project data, filtering and interpreting existing and new information on a large-scale. I also liaised with some of the most senior members at AFE team as well as Associates and Directors through daily VC’s where one of the Senior Engineers and I would present our progress with the project, any issues arising and suggestions where relevant.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I seized a number of opportunities within the timeframe of my placement at AFE. I seek to become a chartered Architect with a specialist technical knowledge of the building engineering, construction process, and product systems. This placement allowed me to gain considerable knowledge and experience in all of the areas mentioned above, something that I have only encountered on a very small scale while studying Architecture.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The office is buzzing yet very focused and professional. There is a variety of rooms and areas to choose from for different use, whether it is a private call to a client - ideal space is 'Focus Room', cluster meetings - 'Metting Rooms' or break-out areas - for lunch and informal meetings. The latter is of immense importance to any office. It is extremely important to be able to have your lunch in a different space and socialise with your colleagues.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • 5/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • 5/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • 1/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • 5/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • 5/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • My rent was cheap £500 - between myself a friend. The food - you can always get a good deal at Lidl. If you're going to get the most out of your time in Glasgow then you will want to go out and see some of what the city has to offer. There are plenty of student deals and discounts on eating out, cinemas, gigs and so on. Most of Glasgow’s local events, festivals, museums and galleries are free or of low cost, and make excellent cultural options to visit cheaply.

    3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Amazing - Glasgow is known for its culture - arts, fashion, and music. There's something for everyone. Music is the food of love and good times in Glasgow pubs, but the high-octane weekend bar and club scene on Sauchiehall Street is not for everyone. Alternative venues abound in the West End around Byres Road and Ashton Lane, in the Merchant City, and on Argyle Street in the upcoming Finnieston district.

    5/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • An immense amount of activities - the graduates are very active - they made sure interns are involved too, whether it is lunch outside the office, dinner or bouldering after work, cycling on the weekend or a simple picnic. I made friends who I am in touch I hope it to stay that way. I was also encouraged by my colleagues to drop by and say hello, as well as to ask any uni-related support, whether it is a project or career advice.
