The Role
The placement I undertook was a very interesting experience as there was a lot of engaging work opportunities as well as a good social side to the internship.
All of the colleges with whom i worked were always really friendly and made me feel like a full time employee rather than just a 3 months intern.
The support offered by my management was very good as I always had a 30 minute/ 1 hour long one-to-one sessions with my line manager to discuss my work, progress and any issues I had.
Whilst some days there was not much I could do as I was waiting on replies/feedback from other manages/engineers before proceeding with my tasks, for the majority of the placement I was busy with work on my project, however despite this there was always opportunities to find work. For example you could shadow another team/department for half a day or half a week to see how other areas of the business work, hence there are many opportunities to make yourself busy with engaging, interesting work
My project was a software design project, developing a tool that is to be used by senior management, hence it felt like i was given a good amount of responsibility being assigned a project, for which the outcome product would be of use to other employees of the company.
As part of my placement, I got to grips with 2 new software languages, VBA and C#, which I know will come in useful when I go back to my studies, as well as being useful in any future employment. Furthermore, the experience of working in an office environment such as the large offices of JLR also helped me develop confidence and social interaction skills in more formal environments as often I had to go out and find people to gather data from.
The Company
The office I worked in was a large open floor flexi-desk office hence there were many people from different teams and departments working in the same room. Whilst this meant that there are many people you don't know, teams tend to sit close together hence you were still sat close to your team members. Furthermore, I got to know some fellow undergraduates who worked near me in the office which meant I could always take a break to go and chat to them if i needed a break from my computer screen.
The overall set up was good. The inductions days gave a good introduction to the business as well as gave everyone an opportunity to meet other undergraduates before beginning work in your department. throughout the weeks of the internship there were many events and tours of various JLR facilities set up for the undergraduates which offered a deeper insight into various areas of the company.
JLR has a SuccessFactors system where there are many online and classroom course opportunities in various fields. These can be undertaken by all employees and the range of different courses available was great as you could undertake a course in a programming language or in social communicating hence this does make me feel like the company does invest in the developing of its staff
Flexi Time
Working from home
Very appealing as i really enjoyed the time i spent with the company and would very much like to come back to continue employment with JLR
The Culture
Yes. Having stayed at Liberty Point in Coventry as recommended by JLR there were about 80 undergraduates staying there. This gave a good social scene at the accommodation and many events were organised such as a 5 a side football league, bowling, bingo as well as just normal nights out.
JLR connected us to Liberty Point student accommodation in Coventry which cost £90/week for an en suite room via the JLR discount. On the whole socializing was quite cheap. Kasbah, a local nightclub was not expensive and there are a number of student bars, 5 minute walk from the accommodation which offer great deals on food and drink.
The nightlife scene was good. Kasbah was the usual place to go to on a Friday night, where the entry was only £5 and drinks were fairly cheap inside, as well as offering food inside too. There were a number of bars which offered different discounts on different days very close to our accommodation too (Phoenix, £6 pitchers on Thursdays).
There was always something you could find to do. Opposite our accommodation there was a good cheap gym to use
