The Role
I worked in the research division on a couple of different projects. The work itself is interesting however it can be a bit long winding. There are a number of processes that need to be followed so the amount of technical work that gets done is limited. Overall though it was an enjoyable experience and the work can be fun at times.
I felt very valued by my colleagues. They were always there to help out and answer any questions that I may have had. All my colleagues were very approachable, most of them have been in the company a long time so they have a lot of experience technically and in the business as a whole. My colleagues were always available to answer any questions that I had.
I felt very valued by my manager. He gave me a detailed induction into the business and my office. After that he provided a lot of support and made me feel very welcome. His door was always open for me in case I had any concerns. We also had regular one to one meetings to ensure I was progressing well.
On a daily basis I would have a number of jobs to do. A lot of this work was just paperwork though and following processes. The amount of technical work I done on a daily basis was limited. Some days would be very quiet, especially during holiday season as it would be impossible to set up meetings. Other days would be busy with lots of meetings.
I was given a good amount of responsibility on a daily basis. The work I carried out was very useful work that would have been done by a more senior person anyway. My work directly affected the output of the projects that I worked on. I carried out a lot of literature reviews which were very important to the output of the project.
My research skills were greatly improved in my time here and this will allow me to use this skill in my university studies. It is a life skill that I can use forever. My report writing skills were also greatly improved, I received a lot of training and support from my colleagues who helped to develop my writing skills and also my research skills.
The Company
The general atmosphere in the office was nice and lively. A lot of meetings take place on a daily basis, but even generally in the office there is always a lot of chatter and people talking and collaborating with each other about the projects. There was never a dull day, there was always something going on in the office, there were a lot of events taking place as well.
The internship was very well set up. The process was long though and overall it took about 6 months from my first application to the final job offer. The on-boarding process was relatively good, they always kept us up to date and ensured we would have a seamless transition into the company. The off-boarding process could have been a bit simpler.
There were a lot of inductions during the placement. There were inductions into the office and also the different areas of the business such as the workshop and the manufacturing plants. There were plenty of E-learning courses to carry out and this was a major part of the personal training and development. Training was also received on the business processes.

They take on a lot of the under graduates and offer them a full time position. They have a large number of graduate positions so the chances of receiving an offer are good. It all depends on how many positions that have available for each department. My manager conducted a review of my work and recommended me so its now up to HR to make a decision.
The Culture
The social scene was very good. We played football every Wednesday for 2 hours at a local sports centre. We also had a regular golf session good. Most of the students lived together so the social scene was very good. Most people stayed at the weekend so we would always go out on a Friday night. The social scene in the area is very good as its very much a student led area.
The cost of living and socialising was around the average for the area. Some locations were more expensive than others but on the whole the prices were good. Plenty of places to eat and generally good prices. The rent was around £100 a week all inclusive which is not too bad. If you wanted to live somewhere really nice then expect to pay a bit more.
The nightlife was good.
Yes, there was a really good social scene here amongst the students. Most of the students lived together so the social scene was very good. Most people stayed at the weekend so we would always go out on a Friday night. The social scene in the area is very good as its very much a student led area. There were plenty of activities availabe to get involved in.
