The Role
The placement consistently changes to fit your changing requirements, if interested in marketing the option to shadow marketing full time employees is there. If you are interested in charity event organisation again the room is there. There is a real sense of responsability, but thats part of what makes a placement so valuable.
Colleagues are extremley welcoming in every aspect. You are far from "just an intern" and am respected and treated like any full time employee. There are also numerous social events for both interns and full time staff.
Management in my department was going through a change when i arrived so it was all a bit hetic. However everyone in my team would make time for me at any point to help me with a career goal or point me in the right direction with a shadowing request. My mentor ensured that any problem i faced in/outside of work were dealt with - this ensured that you can achieve the most out of your year.
I would say I was quite busy (out of my own doing) signing up/leading projects, undertaken many charity projects, career events as well as doing my reasonably involved role was quite challenging. But it was a challenge I enjoyed, you really can choose the amount of extra stuff you get involved in.
There is no question that you are given real responsability - I was on two very high profile accounts. You are not chucked in the deep end, but if you ask for it they hand you the rope - just make sure you dont tie a noose with it! The concept of having responsability is key, as it is this that will allow you to become employable in the future.
I am still on my placement so am not 100% sure, however the skills I have already learnt around service delivery have been exceptional. The further professional skill set that I have developed will be used in my future life and will be a set of skills i never stop using.
The Company
Like any office there are times when work needs to be done. However, Microsoft has such a great active community there is always stuff going on.
The organisation was very good, seemless handover between interns. The only issue is that due to Microsoft interns being innovative and motivated they usually undergo multiple projects. One thing i would say, is be careful when you start not to automatically take every project the previous intern was doing - speak to your manager and make the year your own!
Training, training, training. If you want to do a qualification or a course/workshop in anything - Microsoft will have it, and it will be free.

Only reason I gave 9 stars was because i dont yet have a post graduate job with Microsoft. The concept of being on the MACH seem is amazing. However, due to large number of applicants places are very much limited.
The Culture
Yes. The fellow interns and I were regularly hitting the town/events to show how great a community Microsoft has.
The area itself was quite cheap. In relation to my student life it was slightly more expensive (but thats a student life).
Nightlife was good - I was used to the big cities (London,Manchester) so when comparing anywhere to them its hard to give 10 stars. But for the size of the city I was in (Reading) it was really good.
There were loads of opportunities - but with work and gym I didnt have that much time to pursue further activities.
