The Role
I have very much enjoyed my internship, as I have learnt so much about the firm in such a short time frame. I have created a good network with other interns, seniors and managers and have been able to explore and experience the city of London.
I feel I got along very well with my colleagues. I was always given work that I was able to do and understand, and this work was often presented to clients, which made me feel a large part of the team and showed me that my team trusted me.
I was always given the relevant support when I needed it. Whenever I was confused about something my team would explain it very well, if I had any issues regarding anything work-related that I couldn't ask my colleagues, my counsellor would always be available to help.
I have never once been left empty handed in terms of things to do, and the work I have been given is important to the overall auditing task. If, at any point, I had no work to do, then the company's Web Based Learnings were a good way to enhance my knowledge as I waited for something to come along.
I felt very responsible on my placement. Working for one of the top 5 construction companies in the world meant I was largely expecting to sit and watch to take everything in, but as I've mentioned I have always had important work to do that has on occasion been presented to the client.
I believe everything that I've learned here will remain with me for a long time. As of right now, I'm scheduled to return next year and I think what I've learned can be used to seamlessly pick up where I've left off. I've got a much better grasp of the EY Canvas, DNB Onboard and GT&E.
The Company
Everyone in the office seems really friendly and easy to discuss things with. It is often very work-oriented but it is clear to see that everyone gets along well, this was highlighted to me through some leaving speeches that were made at the beginning of September.
My personal experience is that everything was set up perfectly. The induction days fit their purpose, everything was explained thoroughly and there was always some form of work that was never too far above my current knowledge level. My only issue was the little notice I got with regards to travelling to the client site, as I'd received the email just prior to leaving the office on my 2nd day, and was expected to travel the day after - although this is now something I understand to happen in the real working environment and I feel it was maybe done deliberately to teach me that.
I feel I've developed both as a person and as a professional, even though I've only been here for 4 weeks. I feel far more confident in myself than I ever have, I feel that I am now able to complete tasks I wouldn't have even understood in my first couple of days. I believe I am now in a great position to head back to University and apply my new skills to that aspect of life.
Financial Bonus
Above 25 days holiday
Until further notice, due to my being on the EY Scholarship Scheme, I am scheduled to return in July and (if my results are good enough) after I graduate. Based on this month, I believe in myself now that I am capable of working in a place and environment like this.
The Culture
Everyone seemed to get along really well. All of the interns are part of a group chat that was created after the induction so we could all stay in touch while travelling to different offices or client sites. We will always meet after work on a Friday without fail and catch up with each other on how our week has gone and I feel that I can consider these people friends now, rather than just colleagues.
The cost of living is somewhat expensive, but it was much cheaper than I expected based on what I'd heard, and so that was a pleasant surprise. Also, as I've discussed with some of the other interns, this placement was solely to gain experience and begin building my business network - the money was never an issue. A common phrase you tend to hear is 'I'd do this for free', so the fact that we are paid is very helpful.
I haven't experienced too much of the nightlife, but I find that the places I've been are very nice, and not as intimidating as I previously expected.
We were briefed on the EY Foundation during our induction, and there seems to be a lot of things going on at all times. However, this is something I have distanced myself from for the time being, because as much as I'd love to get involved, a pre-existing medical condition means I am not able to just yet.
