The Role
I relatively enjoyed the internship. I found that some of the tasks were very boring and mundane, due to the fact I was an intern so I couldn't be given tasks with a big responsibility. The travel to different offices was good though and I enjoyed working on a variety of clients.
I felt relatively valued by my colleagues. They were very friendly and eager to help me with any questions I had. However, the tasks they gave me bore very little responsibility and they quite often struggled to give me work to complete, this made me feel like they had more important things to do.
I was given a lot of support by my managers and counsellors. They were extremely helpful with giving me tasks to do as I had never completed tasks like those before and they were very good in explaining them. We were given a buddy and a counsellor who were very supportive throughout the internship.
On some days I was very busy with tasks to do until around 6:30 pm. Other days I was let go early at 4:45 pm. Throughout the days there were times when I had nothing to do but that was mainly due to the nature of the job and as I hadn't had much experience before. I was busy enough but could have been busier - and would have preferred to be busier.
I wasn;'t given that much responsibility. I spent a lot of time changing dates on documents and things like that which could have been given to anyone. I did get one chance to speak to a client alone and gather information and I wish I had more chances like that. However, I was responsible for completing my tasks within the time frame.
I am unsure how much this will help me in my degree studies as it isn't overly relevant. However, if I come back to work for the company then it will have helped massively. I have a basic understanding of the skills and software used to complete the job effectively so it will help me in my career.
The Company
The atmosphere was really good. I worked in four different office environments throughout my internship. All of them were the perfect balance between work and socialising. We ate lunch together and chatted. But when work began we were all working hard but the atmosphere was very pleasant. I enjoyed it very much.
The preparation for the internship was done very well, it was extremely organised. We had a 2 day induction which was organised extremely well alongside weekly learning sessions and calls with the summer internship team. There were always people we could ask if we had queries so it was set up very well.
As of yet they haven't invested much in me but they do provide the professional qualifications free of charge.
Future prospects seem very promising. I can be offered a graduate job at the end of my placement year and I would gladly accept. There is a high probability of a job due to the time and money invested in me and I would enjoy working for them, it would be a good job.
The Culture
There were not many interns in my office and the colleagues (and myself) had other things to do in the evenings.
The only time I socialised was on a trip down to London which was very expensive. In the area of Birmingham I lived at home so it didn't cost me anything except train travel which was quite expensive (£25 return a day). It was the length of time commuting that was the worst part.
N/A
In the month I attended there was not a lot of opportunity but I know that if I rejoined as a full time employee then there would be lots of opportunities including sports teams, charity work etc. I have heard from other employees that they are good but for the internship I did not choose to get involved, but I probably could have if I'd have wanted to.
