    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • Everyone at EY was very friendly and made you feel welcome. When you was given work, they made sure they explained the background of the task and give you some relevant information about the reason for the work. You also got given opportunities to have breakfast with partners and shadow them for a day. Everyone was willing to answer questions you had about different service lines.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • When colleagues were explaining work to you, they would make sure they explained thoroughly and you understood what was required. When you completed work for them, they would give you feedback about what was done well and some constructive criticism. Most of the work you completed was relevant to the sector which you was working in and not simply admin.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • You were allocated a buddy, who you could go to if you did not have any work to do, or just wanted to know questions about the company. I spoke to other people in the team about my interests and what service line would be suited to my strengths and weaknesses. You also had a career counselling session, where they would discuss your placement. They would make sure you were settling in and if you needed any advice.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Each day would vary. In the first week, people were at first unaware that there was new interns in the department and therefore was not giving us any work. Once everyone had been made aware of us, we would be given work to do for around half of the day. There was some days when there was very little work to do. On these days, we could complete some of the online learning courses.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • You was not given a huge amount of responsibility. However, the work we was given was genuine work for clients, so we had to make sure we completed it to a good standard. Every piece of work would be checked over. This ensured that if we were to make any mistakes, they would be picked up, which put less pressure on us when completing tasks.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I have had several internships at EY and have been placed in a different service line each year. This is allowed me to see what types of jobs are available and which are more suited to me. I the most this year when I was placed with a TAX team. This was the one that I was most interested in and most likely to pursue in the future.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • It was quiet. There was occasional jokes made, however most of the time people were hard at work and worked very long hours. Despite this, people were still willing to talk you through work. On Fridays, you were allowed to come in wearing casual clothing. They also on Fridays had food tables which people were welcome to help themselves to. Overall, everyone was friendly, but very busy with work.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Every week you had a meeting with a councilor and other interns. In this meeting you would discuss what work you had completed and what you had learnt. You were allocated a buddy who contacted you before the internship started, so you knew where to go and what to expect. The whole of the first day was an induction event. They explained what was expected of you and what you should expect throughout the internship. There was never a day when you did not know where you should go or what you should be doing. Overall, the set up was excellent.

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • After the internship, you are able to apply for their graduate program. You are given a better insight into what EY values are and what kind of company they are to work for. This helps you when at the interview for the graduate program. You also know what the assessment centers and like and interview process. They offer you help during the induction event and how to maximize your chances of getting a job offer with them. They do not however guarantee a job offer after your internship.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • At the end of the internship, they organize a leaving event (bowling, food & drinks).

    3/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • I was at the canary wharf office. As this is in zone 2, travel was cheaper than other internships may have been that are in zone 1 London. Living expenses such as accommodation and food were very expensive though as it is in London. The internship is paid, which meant that any expenses that you may have occurred, should be covered by the salary. They also offered to reimburse any travel costs when going to the induction event.

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • n/a

    3/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • They have sports teams, but these were not offered to the interns.
