The Role
Learning the new field you are put into can be quite a struggle, as you are surrounded by many confusing concepts and processes. I often felt stressed out due to this, but the teams I have been working with over this internship really made effort to help me. They often asked how I was getting on, are really social and take an interest in you, which really makes you feel like you belong and are welcome to ask for help. You just need to accept there are things you don't understand and are not expected to yet, and feel free to ask questions and then it becomes quite fun and enjoyable.
It was quite surprising to feel welcomed and part of the team. My team took an interest into me as much as I did into them and the work they did. I really enjoyed working with them.
Coming into a new field, I knew I was expecting to give a lot of questions and need some detailed explanations. I was honestly expecting people to attempt to dodge my questions, but I was completely wrong. Even though the people I have been placed with have been super busy, they always took time out of their work to give me really detailed explanations, quite frequently too. I often misunderstood some of the explanations and had to get them explained again, which they were happy to do for me, even if it was a really simple task.
Every day I had some set work to do, I was often given an amount and told to do as much of it as I could in the day, having reviews over it in the afternoon. Some specific tasks had deadlines but they were very reasonable, and help was available whenever I needed it.
I think I was given a fair amount of responsibility. I was given tasks to do, and the reviews t the end of the day helped push you do get work done. Yet also, I was told that at times you will hit a wall and not get much done etc. so there wasn't any sort of extreme pressure.
Having been told to do some research sounded like a really simple task, yet I was given a week to do it. It turned out to be much more difficult than I had anticipated, involving looking at reliable sources of information, relevant data etc. During the internship I found some extremely reliable sources of information that would be able to help me research other things out of work, and even relevant to my degree.
The Company
Given how I was working with a busy team finishing up a project with a close deadline, the team were very positive and always up for a discussion.
Given how this was my third of four years interning here, I can say that a lot of organisation has been put into this internship. You are given an induction day to meet new fellow interns, learn about service lines and the company in general. IT sessions were held to help you get used to the laptops they provide etc also.
Given how I barely understood a large amount of things I was working on, my supervisor sat next to me and was always able to help me within a minute of asking. Even while he was extremely busy he made time to go through the task again slowly, or explain specific processes in detail which in the end took up a lot of his time. After all the long questions he was still happy for me to ask more, definitely making me feel like they were investing their time for me.
Company Parties/Events
The firm definitely have taken interest in us, as well as made us interested in them. Staff are friendly which really makes a huge difference overall, as well as my internship being run over 4 years means I'm always eager to return.
The Culture
In general the staff are really friendly. I was invited out for a meal with a group of people that barely knew me, a team I wasn't working with. But they understood that it would be nice for me to join them so they just went for it. In terms of the team I was working with, I attended one of the socials with them after work as well. But on the most part, I met up with fellow interns for lunch, and everyday had at least one group to potentially be with.
Given the area, you can expect costs to be quite high. Then again my cost of travelling was less than I was expecting, as well as this being a paid internship so the higher costs can be overlooked.
There is actually a ridiculous amount of things you can do after work here. EY even hold their own socials among other events, as well as the option for you to go out to local bars etc. after work with fellow colleagues or friends.
During the internship I actually attended one of the socials held after work. It was a great chance to meet new people with similar interests!
