The Role
I enjoyed my placement as even though it was only for a short amount of time, I got to get involved in lots of different projects and be exposed to a variety of different aspects to the business. The work was challenging but the team were great in taking time out to explain things to me and improve my understanding.
It was a little daunting at first but everyone made me feel very welcome and included in the team.
I was assigned a buddy who had been at the firm for a short time to answer any questions and help me get set up. They met me on my first day at reception, came with me to collect my laptop and took me to the first project I worked on. They also introduced me to the team. I was also assigned a counsellor who had more of a formal role. I had three meetings with them during my time there and at the end of the internship they write a review of your performance to determine whether you are offered a graduate job.
Some days I was fairly busy and had lots to be getting on with, but other days I had virtually nothing to do. When working on projects, your work load varies and as an intern, there are lots of technical aspects of the work I couldn't get involved in. For the most part, people were happy to find work for me. It might be good for interns to be given a research project, or a task to fill any times that they don't have work to do.
I was given a decent amount of responsibility. The section I was in had a lot of compex technical work which I wasn't able to be involved in. However, some of my work was presented to clients.
It doesn't directly help with my degree, other than motivating me to get the required grade. However, this internship gave me a valuable insight into the sort of career I might pursue in the future. Also, having completed an internship at EY enhance my CV.
The Company
Generally in the main office it was very quiet. People were willing to help and chat occasionally but for the most part people were just getting on with work. In project rooms, it was more laid back and there was a better atmosphere.
It was pretty well set up. Having a buddy was very useful and made the first few days a lot easier. We were well supported by the student recruitment team. However, the induction day was perhaps a little too long and could have included more chances to meet other interns. There were optional talks on some lunchtimes but I did not find these useful. There could have been more socials for interns. On our last day we did a half day of work and then went bowling. This wasn't ideal as it would have been better to do a full day of work and then something in the evening as we were only there for a short length of time.
Very appealing.
The Culture
Yes, but interns had to organise themselves.
