    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • Massively enjoyed my internship, the working environment was fantastic, the guidance and support provided by colleagues and supervisors was so comprehensive, the work so engaging and diverse that it was genuinely enjoyable. It massively exceeded my expectations of an internship.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Every individual that I had the pleasure of talking to made the time to talk to me, explain their work to me and assist me in every and any way that they could. This was no mean feat as they all are very busy with their own work and projects, the fact that they were so happy to support meant I felt valued. Further to this, the work given and the feedback on my work was so positive that I felt immensely valued.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My line manager was exceptional. He took the time to explain the company and working environment, ensured I was happy with my work and put me in touch with other subject matter experts and departments where he thought it would be interesting. The guidance and support he provided in our 1:1 feedback meetings was always constructive and aimed towards my personal growth.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Very busy, but in a good way. At the beginning of my internship I was given a number of projects and told that the amount of work would be more than it was possible to complete within the internship. This was to ensure that I understood the importance of task prioritization and adjusted to the reality of moving deadlines in a work environment. Because of this the work I did was always important and kept me busy, I was never sat around with nothing to do.

    5/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • A very large amount of responsibility. The projects I was attached have considerable importance within the companies cyber security strategy.

    5/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • The diversity of work and the massive engagement in me by the company means that I will be able to take the skills I have learnt back to University. A large part of the process was to ensure growth and create development plans which are specifically interested in my next 5 years. This meant that the company was interested in what I could become and how to get there, this was reflected in my opportunities and work.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Polite and friendly, a desire to collaborate and support. A positive environment where everyone is happy to lend an ear over a cup of tea or coffee.

    5/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The internship was well set up. There was a well documented assessment and review process which was built upon by a climate of friendly constructive 1:1's.

    5/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • The opening process of the internship involved extensive personal developmental training and then a lot of meetings to understand National Grid as a company and as a working environment. Beyond this every opportunity that could be even vaguely beneficial was arranged for me to attend with National Grid happily picking up the tab for car hire, petrol, hotels etc. To the end of the process there was further developmental training to help us understand what we've got out of the process and to prepare us for our final reviews and presentations. The assessment process used by Grid was interested in how you developed and how they can facilitate you developing more, excellent process.
