The Role
This was the most enjoyable and the most valuable experience of work that I have had.
As well as being generally friendly and lovely people, my colleagues were always supportive and encouraging. The social environment at Cancer Research UK was definitely one of my highlights.
My manger was always on hand to offer help whenever I needed it. We met regularly to make sure I was on track and offered more than enough guidance to progress in my role and to prepare for after my internship. She was constructive, incredibly supportive and helped build my confidence in the work place.
I always had plenty to do and was never left without a task, even if my manager was out of the office. Despite this, I was rarely too busy to take some time to get involved with aspects of the internships, outside of my role, such as workshops and fundraising. I was able to manage my own schedule.
I was given plenty of responsibility during my internship, including project management, and was able to see the real impact of my work.
This internship was invaluable. I have developed skills and gained experience that has greatly improved my CV and interview skills as I enter a competitive job market.
The Company
Day-to-day, the office was generally fun, very sociable and easy going. However, people respected when their colleagues were particularly busy and could be left to get on with work.
The internship overall was well organised and structured. There are many opportunities that require you to take your own initiative, be proactive and get involved. They will not force you to participate in anything or spoon-feed you.
I felt that the organisation was firmly invested in the personal development of the interns. There were a number of workshops and talks available to help build skills and give us an insight into job hunting and the charity itself. We were set up with a booklet to help structure our personal development and guide us through our time at CRUK so that we made the most of the opportunities there. There is always support available for anything you need. Interns felt like a valued part of the wider CRUK team.

I would love to return to CRUK.
The Culture
The CRUK employees are so friendly and love to go for drinks or lunch. The social scene amongst the interns was great! There are plenty of social traditions to get involved in. Such a brilliant environment to make loads of friends.
London is unsurprisingly expensive to live in. For an unpaid internship like this, it is best to commute, live at home or stay with friends if you can. But there are decent discounts in places local to the office if you work for CRUK.
The office's local area is pretty decent but you're in Central London so it's not too long to travel somewhere else.
There were opportunities to get involved with intern fundraising. This is a great way to socialise, contribute to the charity and do something outside of your role.
