The Role
My year was amazing! I would thoroughly recommend it to anyone thinking of applying for a placement as I learned so much and really enjoyed myself.
I felt that my colleagues really cared about how I was doing, particularly at the start when everything was new to me, and they were always on hand to help me out if I was unsure of anything.
My boss was brilliant, he taught me so much and always made time for me when I needed help.
It varied from week to week, depending on what experiments I was running but there was always something to do and I rarely felt too busy, my team were always happy to help out.
After the initial few months of learning what to do and how to do it I was able to plan my own experiments and use my time as I saw fit with my team on hand if I needed help or advice of course!
I am looking to do a PhD and am sure the lab skills I learnt on my placement will be invaluable. My work ethic is also much improved which is helpful for uni work!
The Company
My team were lovely and always fun to chat to, my boss told some of the worst jokes I have ever heard, but it was a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.
It was evident that GSK take on lots of students and know how to run a good placement, I was in the most capable of hands.
I enjoyed lots of training which I will definately use in my future career including a tissue culture course, a course in experimental design and many lectures and seminars on a variety of interesting topics.
Sports and Social Club
Subsidised/Company Gym
Company Parties/Events
Staff Sales/Staff Shop
Above 25 days holiday
The pharmaceutical industry is not the most stable industry to be in at the moment, but I have been assured that they would love to have me back after my PhD if there are any jobs available.
The Culture
There were lots and lots of students so it was easy to find a group that you got along with.
Stevenage is close to London so some things were expensive but, as with anywhere you can definately live on a budget and still have fun.
Stevenage was not the nicest of towns but there were some good nights out.
It depends on the kind of person you are, I went to dance classes and joined an active local church but some people preferred not to join local groups
