The Role
Enterprise-Rent-A-Car offers a great internship program which you can do between years at university. You get to learn what it's like to work in an office environment and gain an important understanding of how businesses operate.
Everyone in the branch gets along really well and that's one of the main aspects that made it so enjoyable. We worked well as a team but could also have more relaxed moments. I wasn't treated like a 'lowly intern'; I was treated the same as everyone else and if I had an idea it was considered equally with others.
The right amount of support was always given. I felt I could make decisions on my own but if I ever needed to confirm something or ask a question one of my colleagues was always near by.
The branch I worked at was one of the busiest in the area which meant sometimes you were thinking on your feet. This really helped me improve my multitasking skills and I learnt how to remain calm under pressure.
I was responsible for the wellbeing of customers I served and if I felt there had been an issue with the service they had received, I had the responsibility to rectify it. I was also responsible for training two other members of staff.
I gained a good understanding of how businesses worked and increased my commercial awareness. My multitasking skills and ability to remain calm under pressure was greatly improved. I learned how to communicate more effectively both with customers and colleagues.
The Company
The office was usually very busy but always had a positive environment. If you made a mistake you learnt from it you weren't screamed at. This made it an enjoyable atmosphere for work. When a customer had a complaint or was causing a scene it was dealt with quickly and efficiently. Everyone in the office was very patient and good at calming people down.
It felt like less of an internship and more of a job. This was good because you felt like a full time member of the team not just someone who would be gone in a few months. I feel like the three month placement would lead on very nicely to the full year or even the graduate program. There was a folder to work through throughout my internship so I always had something to aim for.
The main section of training was at the beginning of the internship; there were three days spent at head office learning the basics of the role but after that it was mainly learning on the job. People were always there to answer any questions if I had any. I enjoyed learning on the go because it meant I was able to see what it meant in the business not just the theory.
Company Parties/Events
Since starting at Enterprise I have had many emails congratulating people on their promotions. They are very frequent and in my office I have seen numerous colleagues progress but haven't witnessed anyone leaving. On average most people get promoted from management trainee to management assistant within two years
The Culture
We arranged to go out a few times, outside of official work meals or nights out. Everyone got along inside and outside of work so there were a few bowling outings and cinema trips. There was definitely a very food based atmosphere at work but maybe that's because we were located right next to three fast food places.
I live in the same area for university so it wasn't anything I wasn't used to. The costs of living and socializing were average. Nothing was too expensive. I could walk to the branch if I needed too as it wasn't too far away. There was plenty of food available nearby.
The area I live is quite student orientated so there are a few clubs and plenty of restaurants and bars to visit. The area isn't overly expensive so there is always something to do that is within the budget.
