The Role
I enjoyed a lot of aspects involved with the Internship. The work was fast paced so the time never seemed to drag and the internship felt unique in the fact that you were able to do a lot of driving which I liked.
My team was great. I worked in the Winchester branch and the team around me was very supportive. The key factor was that everyone you are working with has been a new starter in your position so I always felt comfortable to ask my colleagues for help or advice.
The management there were always on hand to help. Despite the branch feeling very busy a lot of the time, the Assistant Manager and the Branch Manager always had time for any questions that you might have.
The branch always felt busy. At times this was great as you felt like you were working quickly and effectively but I felt like this could shift very quickly into running behind time. Once I started working full time hours, it was very rare that I would be finished anywhere close to the closing time of the branch which was 6pm.
As an intern you are not expecting to be given that much responsibility, but at Enterprise they are good at throwing you in at the deep end. This is not a bad thing as your colleagues are always on hand to help, but once you feel confident enough you are very much responsible for dealing with your own customers and work.
The basic skills I learnt here at Enterprise I consider to be very valuable. I learnt simple things such as what it takes to commit to employment on a full time basis, as someone who has only ever worked part time jobs. Socially, Enterprise is also very good for your development. You are tasked with talking to customers one on one several times a day and as a result of this learning to think on your feet with the problems that they might raise is also a great skill I developed. You get a glimpse of how a business is run just by observing the Branch manager, watching him run the day regularly helps you gain an insight into a lot of useful skills.
The Company
I found at Enterprise it was a great place to work but only when things are going well. The atmosphere could change for the worse very quickly just due to the nature of the store being so fast paced and at times quite stressful.
The structure of the Internship is very good. You are given a folder to work through which monitors your development and helps you progress. The problem being, that with the branch being so busy, you could often feel a bit worried about asking your manager to go through your folder with you as you could see around you how busy the work environment was.
The company try and help you a lot when you first start out and you leave training at head office feeling very motivated to get started at your branch. It is a little bit of a different story when you get to branch as once you are up to speed you are expected to work very hard. I didn't have a problem with this, but I felt like I wasn't fully made aware of the hours or how much you are expected to commit to Enterprise.
The scope for promotion at Enterprise is very impressive, if you are willing to put your head down and work hard you can be looking at a management position quicker than most other places. I found it quite difficult to maintain a healthy work / play balance due to the hours. We were asked to get in at 7:30am every morning and at my branch I wasn't leaving until around 19:00, so this puts me off a career.
The Culture
You are working amongst other Uni students so there is a good opportunity to make friends within work. I was able to lift share a lot with another girl from Southampton so that worked very well and a couple other of my colleagues were also uni students.
Minimal costs, as previously said, I was able to lift share a lot and worked within the city center in Winchester so it was always easy to get to work and get lunch etc whilst you were at work.
Doesn't really apply to this internship. You occasionally go for a drink with your colleagues, but most of the time by the end of the da everyone is keen to get home
There was lots of charity events that you were encouraged to get involved with. There were also sales competitions which had prizes that involved activities outside of work. I went Go-Karting on my last day with my team which was great fun.
