The Role
I really enjoyed my internship at Handelsbanken and learnt a great deal during my time in the role.
My colleagues at Handelsbanken were all lovely to work with and very supportive and accepting. They were always willing to answer any questions I had and give me help if I was finding a task confusing.
My branch manager and the personnel department were very helpful in answering any queries I had.
I usually had enough to do, especially if carrying out specific projects, however this did vary depending on the number of staff who were in the branch and the workload for the day.
I was allowed to carry out numerous tasks that an account manager support would carry out, which gave me a certain amount of responsibility. I could not undertake certain aspects of some tasks due to limitations regarding experience and access to some systems however as more experience is gained this would change.
The skills I developed during my time here will hopefully be very useful going forwards. I have also gained a great deal of knowledge about banking and Handelsbanken in particular which has given me a much better understanding of the financial sector.
The Company
The office was very enjoyable to work in as everyone was really friendly and willing to help each other out.
Handelsbanken has no set internship programme however it has become more structured in recent years. The programme was well organised and the communication between the personnel department and the interns was very good, both during and pre the placement. The region I was working in held an intern induction day at head office which was very insightful, organised and useful as it enabled us to learn more about the bank and meet our fellow interns from around the region.
The personnel department checked in on the interns during our time with the bank and assigned us a buddy (a previous Handelsbanken intern now working for the bank). I received a call before leaving the bank to discuss my time here and met with my branch manager to discuss my experiences.
I really enjoyed working at Handelsbanken and would definitely consider doing another internship here or trying to gain permanent employment with the bank in the future. There are numerous different roles and locations throughout the UK and the world and the prospect for development is very appealing, particularly for young people joining the bank.
The Culture
The branch went for lunch in groups on Fridays, which was very social and a good way to end the week. We had a few events during my time here which were great for socialising with my colleagues and networking with people from other firms.
