About You
I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Hogan Lovells. Aside from a packed and informative timetable, the firm also put on several social events which provided the opportunity to engage with the firm and its employees in a more relaxed manner.
I felt very welcomed and valued within my two weeks. The trainees were particulaly helpful and communicative - taking vacation students out for lunches and coffees. More senior employees were equally welcoming, and made a huge effort to make me feel at ease and included within their respective departments.
I was definitely well supported and people made a huge effort to talk to me about the career path in general, and also the firm itself.
I think the scheme gave students important insight into the sorts of skills they would require in the early stages of a career there.
The Company
The structure of the vacation scheme was exceptional and gave students an insight into a wide variety of practice areas - through various talks and workshops.
Generally the atmosphere was friendly, welcoming and fairly relaxed.
I think the firm did the best they could in the period of time available. Ultimately I think that the scheme was geared more towards helping you decide whether the firm and the career path were suited to you. Despite that, Hogan Lovells evidently went to a lot of effort to ensure that students had a well rounded and interesting experience. Further, all members of staff - particularly the trainees - made a huge effort to make me feel welcome. In that sense they were clearly invested in each student.
Although it would be impossible to give a complete sense of what it would be like to have a full time role within the firm, largely the scheme provided this by scheduling a huge number of networking activities which enabled me to ask questions. Employees were very open about theor workload and their careers, and this was hugely informative.
I think the scheme gave me a valuable insight into company culture - particularly at trainee level. It is evident that Hogan Lovells is a firm that values a friendly and welcoming manner, and actively encourages its staff to network. Beyond this, the company also seems to have a sense of fun, and staff at all levels were engaging in christmas dinners and christmas parties.
Very valuable. The scheme helped me understand the variety of career paths open to me and the breadth and depth of the company's work. It was very informative and certainly helped me to feel more secure in my choice of career path.
Everything Else
I was paid adequately for this scheme, and was certainly paid in line with what other firms are offering vacation students. However, coming from Glasgow and having to find accommodation, I did end up spending more than I earned over the course of the two weeks.
There were countless opportunities for networking. Not only were there a great number of social events (lunches, iceskating, dinner) but trainees made a particular effort to take you out for coffee and ask if you were getting on okay. Overall the great number of opportunities to network were crucial to the scheme's success, as I felt welcomed and well informed.
The networking and social opportunities were positive and varied in nature. They were also well attended by a huge number of members of the firm, not just graduate recruitment. This was reflective of the value Hogan Lovells placed on the vacation scheme. Overall the social events were very well planned.
The scheme provided an excellent talk on pro bono work within the firm, which was hugely interesting and informative. However, I'm not sure I can remember any actual information on activities outside of work, aside from the odd bit of information about a football team. Saying that, we were given a tour of the gym and it was evident that there were lots of social events amongst the trainees.
Yes, I'd definitely reccommend this scheme to a friend. Largely because of the variety of talks, workshops and information available. Also because of the extent to which the employees of Hogan Lovells cared about your presence, and made a particular effort to welcome you. Overall, it was very well structured and a great deal of care was taken over the students' experience and their enjoyment.
