The Role
I thoroughly enjoyed my internship! I learnt an awful lot in such a short period of time and was quite expecting the level of responsibility that I was given.
The team made me feel incredibly welcome and took the time to explain what they were doing. I understood how every task I was given on site contributed to the team which made me feel valued. Additionally I was invited to events outside of work which also made me feel welcome!
Tasks were fully explained to me and at the end of my placement I had a project review to reflect on my time and what I had learnt.
I was really busy on my placement however I didn't mind this as it meant that I learnt a lot more and was given more responsibility.
I was given a lot more responsibility than I was expecting and compared to friends working for other companies. I enjoyed this though as it meant that I learnt more and got more of a sense of what life as a civil engineer is like.
I gained not only a lot of technical knowledge whilst on my placement but it was an opportunity for me to develop a lot of personal and professional qualities which I'm certain will help with both my future studies and employment.
The Company
The atmosphere in the office was generally really positive and I enjoyed going to work each day. However everyone also was clearly committed to their jobs as well which was understandable but everyone also took the time to answer any questions I had regarding the project or their role. I would say in general the team was very friendly and welcoming however committed to their roles.
Very well organised. We were provided with competencies which helped structure the placement ensuring we had a broader understanding and the 6 week placement programme was also well done. The weekly webinars allowed us to experience all sides of the business and hear about exciting projects underway.
I think they invested a lot as throughout the placement I was given multiple responsibilities and learnt a lot about the industry as well as Laing O'Rourke as a company. Additionally as I am on the ICE Quest scholarship scheme with Laing O'Rourke they are alongside the Institute of Civil Engineers financially investing in me as they are contributing towards paying my university degree.

Company Parties/Events
Very promising as to get my final instalment I'm expected to sign on with the company onto their Graduate development programme. However I am aware that I need to achieve at least a 2:1 in my degree. The experience I will gain on the placements is invaluable though and additionally the company see it as a 5 year long interview. I am unsure yet as to whether I will be required to interview to gain a place on the graduate development programme.
The Culture
The office organised a few social social events throughout my placement which were fun to attend and everyone could get involved. Additionally as part of the summer placement programme there was both a welcome and final event which I thoroughly enjoyed and it was nice to mix with the other students on sites around the country.
Cost of living wasn't too bad which was good as it meant I could save more money. However the social scene wasn't quite as active as I was living in the middle of the countryside. It didn't matter too much though as I was exhausted when I came home from work so wouldn't have probably had the energy but it was a beautiful part of the country to live.
Pretty non existent!
There were multiple activities organised not only just by the office but as Laing O'Rourke as a company. The office went out on a few occasions for instance for a pub quiz and a cricket match. The company as a whole organised a welcome and final event which was really fun and it was nice to meet the other summer placement students working on sites around the country.
