The Role
My placement has been the best first working experience I could have asked for. There are amazing people, a great work life balance/social element an amazing intern community and also lots of extra non-work related initiatives to get involved with which help you develop your skills both technically and personally. I genuinely don't think you could ask for more from a placement.
I felt valued and listened to by my colleagues.
My manager was always really supportive, providing guidance on what he thought was best for me. He always provided me with the opportunity to pursue things I was interested in and freedom to choose what I wanted to work on. He was also really great in discussing future goals and providing good feedback to help me grow in the company.
A good level of busy, always given a great balance between having things to do whilst maintaining a low pressured environment in which to learn.
Treated like any other developer on the team, autonomy to choose what to work on/ pick up, responsible for delivering results like any other employee. However also given the reassurance that it was ok to ask for help and support so that I felt the responsibility was with others as well and not solely on me.
I have no doubt that the skills I have learnt will come in useful at many points in my degree/career. My technical and professional skills have been improved greatly and I have no doubt will help me in the future in whatever I choose to pursue in the tech industry.
The Company
Fun and exciting atmosphere- very social and open workspace
The placement is extremely organized with alot of thought put into all the extra initiatives for example : infobytes (a lunch where people from different parts of the company explained what they do), catch-ups, breakfast with leaders, hack the flag challange and hackathons. Also socials are regularly organized for the interns so there is a good intern community spirit and fun atmosphere
I feel like expedia makes a huge investment in all the interns it takes on. The company not only pays a great salary but constantly provides the opportunity to better yourself through training and development initiatives.
Flexi Time
Sports and Social Club
Working from home
The company is very appealing to me as a future employer, offering a great atmosphere and place for my first job. I would love to come back as a grad and am hoping to be offered at the end of my placement.
The Culture
The social scene at expedia is hands down the best I've seen amongst all my friends on placement elsewhere. Just a few examples of things organised include: Treasure hunt Kareoke End of month drinks Hackathon Hack the flag challenge Ballie Ballerson Xmas party
London is expensive in general, however i found it was not massively more expensive than Guildford.
Great.
So many opportunities for volunteering, socialising and other non- work related events.
