About You
Having completed a number of vacation schemes the Hogan Lovells vacation scheme was by far the best one I have completed. It had the right balance across the spectrum, social vs work, challenging, insightful and extremely beneficial not only for legal experience but also academically. I thoroughly recommend this vacation scheme.
I felt extremely valued during my time with Hogan Lovells. Everybody was extremely friendly and supportive providing encouraging feedback and ensuring that I was constantly challenged. I was tasked with responsibilities that I have not received at other firms, such as preparing for and attending court, drafting client letters and team memos etc. Receiving such tasks showed that I was valued and trusted to complete the work well.
I received consistent support throughout the scheme from my trainee mentor, other trainees and the associates that I was sitting with across three areas. I was encouraged to research and find answers for myself before asking for support so as to enhance my capabilities and to reflect that which would be expected of a trainee. I was constantly challenged but always supported which provided a nice balance.
I developed new research skills and became more acquainted with legal databases such as Westlaw and Lexis. The research skills that I have taken from the experience will be especially useful whilst completing my dissertation but will also enable me to begin my first day as a trainee confident that I know how to use the aforementioned systems.
The Company
The vacation scheme was very well structured. On day one we were given a large booklet of information which covered everything we needed to know including our timetable for the three week period. There was a good balance of work/presentations/workshops and socials which were all spread evenly throughout the three weeks to provide the best experience possible.
The vacation scheme students all bonded very quickly and organised social events outside of those organised by the firm, also the opportunity to work on group projects provided a further opportunity to work alongside other vac schemers. Everybody at the firm was very friendly and helpful, always having time to speak with me and there seemed to be a really positive vibe about the office even during very busy periods eg the day before attending court. It felt like a real team and not every person for themselves.
The firm put on regular presentations and workshops intended to improve our skills.
The vacation scheme provided an accurate representation of the role of a trainee as we were given trainee tasks to complete.
Given that the vacation scheme was three weeks long, I was exposed to the culture of the firm across three different teams and each one demonstrated a supportive team environment.
The content of the vacation scheme was extremely useful in enabling me to decide whether a career with Hogan Lovells was the right choice for me. By doing a vacation scheme you get a deeper understanding of the work and the nature of the firm which you don't get through a website alone.
