The Role
Overall I enjoyed my experience at Verizon. My team and the other interns were friendly and my work was varied and challenging. The only thing that would have been better is that the intern programme could have been organised slightly more efficiently
My team made me feel very included. They spent a lot of time (voluntarily) to explain and train me on softwares and procedures. I felt like a member of the team.
I was given lots of support and guidance. My manager was excellent. He gave me guidance if I asked, or if he thought of something, which I appreciated. In terms of support, manager was also very accommodating. Verizon have a flexible working policy so I was allowed to work from home sometimes.
Consistently busy throughout the internship (but not overworked). At the start and end i was less busy as projects were just starting and finishing. My standard hours were 8:30-5:30ish.
My manager set me tasks which were challenging and gave me responsibility for some reports seen by a wide audience.
I don't think this internship would have helped academia (apart from time management), but in terms of professional skills learnt, it was invaluable
The Company
The office is quite quiet - due to Verizon's flexible working policy the office is only ever half full (on a busy day), so it can be quiet. However, everyone in the office is friendly and chatty. The other interns who work in Reading also increase the atmosphere.
Overall, it was relatively well organised. However, I felt that everything was slightly rushed. Mid internship and final internship reviews felt like a rushed formality and some of the intern events that were meant to happen never did.
I was allowed to access the wide online training resources bank. I could have also attended training courses (I didn't as there wasn't one which worked for me). Overall a good level of resources.

I would work for Verizon again. However, they don't have a graduate scheme.
The Culture
Very good. Most of the interns were new to the Reading area, so we socialised a lot and met up after work and on weekends. As the intern group is rather small (8) we formed strong friendships!
Reading is cheaper than London, but expensive in comparison the the rest of England.
Great selection of pubs and clubs in Reading.
I was involved in some of the charity side of Verizon. I got to participate in some fundraising and visit the charity.
