The Role
BCG is and has always been my favourite firm and hence I had lot of expectations. Luckily, none of these lead to me being left disappointed. I had a great experience, learned a lot and made lots of new friends. I became hands-on insights into what it is like to be a consulting analyst and this is exactly what I wanted!
I knew that I would not always feel valued by my co-workers as I would by my parents. Of course, I informed myself about firms, such as BCG, and hence also knew about how human resources is handled. So me not having felt valued all the time was not a problem specific to my placement, but is rather general thing.
Guidance was good. I was always free to ask as long as I did not pose a dumb question which I could have solved on my own as well. But once you manage this, I could have asked anybody to help me out. The work environment was really relaxed, and above all people were really motivated.
My internship was structured well and I was quiet busy. I was responsible for a fixed amount of projects at the same time and expectations were clear. Besides, there events for interns were organised on a regular basis. Even though, my work times were not fixed and I even had to do something for an MD on the weekend.
BCG trust you a lot and gives you many projects to work on. As a result I developed a lot of interdisciplinary skills, such as human skills. These are really valuable not only for my career but in every situation in life. Obviously, I only have my friends’ report to compare my experience with but this aspect is definitely why I would recommend anybody to do this internship, even if you are not as interested in consulting.
As mentioned, as a result of the big responsibility I have developed leadership skills. Looking back, I could definitely see the improvements which are reflected in my better communication skills for example. It has always something that I wanted to work on and through these coaching sessions, activities and video footage, I learned where I exactly I have to work on.
The Company
The internship at BCG was a great experience filled with friendly people. I completed a spring week at another company before this summer internship and I can say that the atmosphere at the summer internship at BCG was hands down more pleasant. Senior managers took their time to network with us and graduate took their time to hang out with us and give us tips to get into the company.
The insight is very well organised. A typical work week was intense and started from the day that you arrived. Personally, I find this very good as you’re making the most of your time. However, this only ensures that you'll make the most out of your time there and won't wast it. I liked the grind that was needed to complete the projects on time.
To a great extent. The presentations were really helpful to show the career possibilities and the group tasks involved real life tasks that showcased the daily life of the employees. I definitely want to work BCG in the future and it showed my finally what this career path will be right for me.
