The Role
Expedia provided a wonderful internship that was comprehensive in many ways. The HR organised a great induction that provided a good overview of the company and what it does as well as how the business operates. The work given was challenging and fulfilling with lots of support in terms of training and resources. Additionally, the workplace culture was relaxed, respected autonomy and was a lot of fun as well with socials and avenues to network.
My colleagues went out of their way to make me feel at home. We regularly grabbed lunch together and went for drinks and got to know each other. There was hardly any heirarchy and I did not feel like an intern. I was treated very much like a full-time employee. They checked in regularly to make sure I was doing well and helped me quickly get up to speed with all the acronyms and business jargon too.
My manager was fantastic in many ways. He was not a micromanager so he gave a lot of room for creativity as long as the objectives and deliverables were being met. I was constantly encouraged to attend meetings with teams that would provide me a better understanding of the business and the work I was doing. Additionally, he was always there for brainstorming and coming up with creative solutions to the challenges that came up during the project.
I was not on a fixed schedule as I was working on my own independent project. The schedule varied day to day depending on the timeline and the deliverables of the project. I never felt too pressured as such and there was great work-life balance in the team. That being said, the pace of the project was fast enough that I always felt intellectually challenged and was never bored with no work to do.
As mentioned before, I was treated like a full-time employee. Never did I feel like the work I was doing was not important or unnecessary. The team openly talked about the project I was working on during business meetings and got stakeholders interested. Towards the end of the internship, I presented my findings from the project to multiple stakeholders and I was given full responsibility to prepare and deliver the presentations. It was a very empowering process!
I am studying public policy with a large quantitative focus in the master's course. I enhanced my statistical knowledge and learned a lot of very important big data wrangling techniques. These skills are very valuable in the area of work I am interested in. Additionally, the soft skills of strategic thinking, stakeholder management and project management will go well beyond my studies into my career.
The Company
The atmosphere in the office was extremely fun and collaborative. There were many events for socialising and networking which made it easy to get to know other colleagues. It was always easy to take a quick a break and play a game of table football or table tennis. A very fun atmosphere!
The internship was excellently organised. There was a great induction which started us off on a good note with a great overview of the company. The team provided all the needed resources to make the internship productive. Additionally, there were regular events to get to know what other teams in the company were doing and learn from their knowledge and broaden our view of the business and technical areas.
There were ample opportunities for personal development. We had a lot of workshops organised in the first few weeks including a workshop on agile techniques, technical workshops (SQL, R) etc and there were other fun opportunities like hackathons etc. which were available for learning and applying skills. Additionally, the team was always happy to find relevant colleagues with expertise to share specific knowledge and skills.
Flexi Time
Company Parties/Events
The company is massive and has a lot of employment opportunities. There is a lot of encouragement within the company to always talk to other teams and get to know the available roles. There is no limitation in terms of applying to roles only in particular teams. With so many opportunities available and a lot of encouragement from the HR, I am quite excited to consider job prospects with Expedia in the future.
The Culture
There was a lively social scene amongst the fellow interns. We had regular parties and drinks sessions and it was always easy to catch a few colleagues for lunch. Additionally, the company events organised by HR just for the interns were a great avenue to socialise as well as have a good time exploring London (for those who were new to London).
Angel was not particularly cheap but there were markets and cheap food options available nearby. We also got a few employee perks for drinks and food around the office.
There were a lot of bars nearby and enough avenues for a good nightlife.
There were ample opportunities for socialising and additionally volunteering as well.
