The Role
Really enjoyed the internship. Was placed into a great team with a great atmosphere. I learned so much during my 9-week period here, whereby I received a job at the end of it.
I felt more valued as time went on as I began to pick up things more and more. I also made less mistakes and had to ask less questions which made me feel like less of a nuisance and more of an asset to the team.
The support I received was fantastic. I was told that 'there is no such thing as a silly question' and this was proven throughout my internship. Colleagues and management were always available to help and really made an impact on my progress as an intern.
Very busy. There was always work/tasks that could be done. This was great as it is more interesting if you're busy, also it meant that I was constantly learning and building on my skills.
I was given a significant amount of responsibility considering how short the internship was. Initially, I was given admin/menial tasks to understand the clientele and the basics. Also, I needed to be familiar with the systems used within the bank in order to complete harder tasks, but this came with time and so did greater responsibility.
I studied History at university, however I had planned to study Economics. My degree gave me analytical skills which are vital in the banking industry, I just needed to hone them to a more quantitative-based subject rather than qualitative-based like History. Overall, the skills I developed during my training, paired with my background in Economics & Maths at A-Level and my History degree made me a suitable candidate for the role.
The Company
A great atmosphere - everybody got along with each other. It was a positive environment to work in, but people could also focus on tasks at hand without being disrupted.
I think it was extremely organised. I never felt out of the loop or like I was doing something pointless. We were in constant contact with the HR team and the branch found a purpose for me everyday, rather than the stereotypical 'tea-making intern'!
I underwent compulsory online training courses to give me the skills and knowledge to carry out my role effectively. I was given a mentor/buddy who helped teach and show me how to complete more difficult tasks. A lot of time went into making sure I kept improving which was nice to see.
Very appealing. I was offered a contract after I completed the internship.
The Culture
We met up on various occasions to socialise and also to complete group work. But we always had fun and enjoyed catching up on how we were all doing.
I lived at home and commuted via train so not too expensive.
I didn't particularly go out in the surrounding area during my internship, although from past experiences it's been fantastic.
Opportunities to go on exercise-related activities with work colleagues or social drinks at bars/restaurants.
