    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I really enjoyed my internship due to many reasons: I had an amazing and supportive team, my project was very interesting and challenging and the general internship environment at Bloomberg is nothing short of exceptional. I believe that, out of all the IT companies out there, Bloomberg is one of the few that actually considers the opinion of interns valuable and that their experience, not only work related, is valuable.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I felt actually valued in my team, even as an intern. I was always included in meetings and my opinion was always heard when I raised one. Furthermore, I was never told no when I requested help, even though they were all very busy with their own work. I felt like I could always come to them when I needed help. I also loved the fact that I was always welcome to lunch with them, which went a long way towards making me feel included.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I received more than enough guidance and supervision. Although they were always up to date on what I was doing, they never overstepped. I felt that they trusted me to make my own judgement calls and, when they proved to not be what they wanted, they would explain to me in detail the reason why and I could even debate my own opinion. It was really amazing to see that such amazing and knowledgeable people can make time to explain what sometimes must be some of the simplest things for them.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I consider myself one of the busier interns here, as I was given a project to start from scratch. There was no groundwork whatsoever , so I had to set up a lot of backend before I could actually get to work, but it was still a very good experience. I got to learn much more than I expected and I expanded my knowledge in a lot of fields. Furthermore, while at times it may have seemed daunting to have so many pull requests at once, I enjoyed the fact that people took time to give me comprehensive feedback.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was trusted to make my own decisions throughout the duration of my internship. Even though sometimes they were not in the direction that my team wished, they were always received gracefully and the reasons why they were not quite right were always explained to me in detail. I never got the feeling like I was there just to follow orders. but that I could also bring my own ideas and implement my own suggestions, so long as they were in line with the ultimate goal of the project.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • This is actually one of the aspects of my internship work experience that amaze me most. Throughout my work on the project, I got the change to learn most of the subjects that I am going to study next year, more or less on the level that I am going to require. This really helped me gain some confidence in regard to challenges laying ahead, because I now feel I have enough experience to have a better chance of taking my third university year in stride.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The general atmosphere in the office was very relaxed and friendly and I felt like I really got along with my colleagues. I was glad to be invited to lunch with them, which does not happen that often among interns. In addition, I was always really glad to see that they were eager to accompany me to intern events, even when they were taking place during work hours. Overall, the general atmosphere in the office was relaxed, friendly and very welcoming.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The internship was very well organised, in more ways than one. First of all, we received constant updates from HR on what events were coming up, reminders and updates. They really wanted everyone to feel included in any activity. Moreover, I never had a problem in terms of organisation and any lack of clarity regarding events could always be quickly resolved by a simple email. I really liked the fact that even as interns, it felt like we were just as important as every employee.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I really enjoyed the fact that the company took time to do a little training for us before putting us to work. It really helped during those first tasks to have a general idea of the Bloomberg infrastructure and to be able to navigate the Bloomberg internal system in an informed way. In addition, training also provided an opportunity to get to know other interns and to socialize with people that might be able to help in future tasks. It felt like it was an opportunity to make the most out of our work.

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I would really love to have the opportunity to work for Bloomberg again. There are many wonderful things I could say about this company, but I think what I loved most is the quality of the people here. Everyone is amazing and polite and understanding and generally really keen on you having the best experience possible. I would also love to be able to use all the knowledge I gained this year on future Bloomberg project, as I feel that I got the chance to familiarize myself with the internal tools.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?

In addition, I really liked the people in my intern class. They were really nice people, always ready for a new London adventure. I really enjoyed all the adventures I had with them and I hope I get to see them again in the future, as the made a great impact on my amazing experience here.
