The Role
For my 8 week placement I enjoyed the works that I was given responsibility for. I did have previous experiences from a previous placement for these works although some jobs were new to me.
I had a great rapport with the team. I also firmly believe that they trusted me to complete my work to a good standard. Would have enjoyed staying on for longer to improve on this connection.
Given my previous experience I was expected to know a lot of the work but I was still given guidance if I asked for it.
The job the work sometimes varied from days were little work was allowed to days where many jobs were happening at the same time. This allowed me to manage my time better. I enjoyed the different running of the days however.
I was given complete responsibility of my area. As mentioned if I needed help/information I got it but largely I managed to go through my placement without my supervisors having to take over my responsibilities.
The major skills I learnt from my placmernt were time management, managing skills and communication. These skills are necessary ones that I will use throughout my working career. I was also allowed to further my technical skills in regards to setting out and reading different drawings.
The Company
The office atmosphere was very friendly everyone had a good relationship which made it easy to work with.
I was given my jobs and responsibilities on day one and my own area of works. It was a different site to my previous one so I was grateful for the experience. I would've however liked to try some of the other aspects of work e.g. basement works but the time I was there and workforce size didn't allow this as much.
Although I didn't go on any training or development courses my supervisors taught me a lot of new information that I can use going forward.
I have no complaints with any of the works I have been given by Laing O'Rourke. I have learnt so much in what seems like so little time. The people that I have met are people I hope to stay in contact with in the future. They have delivered exactly in what I thought I was agreeing to in that they will both support me and give me the freedom to take responsibility for myself and the jobs that I am working on. I hope to get a job with Laing O'Rourke once I finished university.
The Culture
We had fun social events arranged by the company and good activities on 'Graduate days' to great good connections and friendships.
I was based in London so the prices were reasonably expensive in comparison to my home area. I had to commute in from Essex given the length of my placement which was very expensive although this was subsidised by the company.
We often went to pubs and bars on Fridays which was usually quite fun and quite busy.
I personally wasn't offered any outside of work opportunities during my placement. I was welcome/invited to any out of office meal for lunch or breakfast and Friday night drinks.
