The Role
A really good placement with many other students and so a good atmosphere.
We had lab meetings to discuss results, and my results were always taken into account as much as anyone else.
Whenever I needed to ask a question I could, whether that be about lab work or office work and so I never felt out of my depth
I was very busy, but this was good as I was able to make the most out of every day and it also made time go really fast!
I was left alone after I'd gotten to grips with things, to carry out my own experiments and so I learnt to be independent and this also gave me the flexibility to carry out the lab work when I wanted
As I want to continue with a science career, the skills I learnt at GSK in the lab are skills that will be really valuable for me in future careers and the writing skills of having to write a placement report, are really assisting me with my final year project report.
The Company
There was a good balance between silent times when it was good to get on with work, or big office chats about the apprentice! It was a very friendly atmosphere.
GSK are used to having students so they know what to expect from us and therefore know how to deal with us.
GSK didn't really invest in me, but by being able to learn lab techniques I feel that I've had personal training and have developed as a scientist in the lab.
Flexi Time
Sports and Social Club
Company Parties/Events
Staff Sales/Staff Shop
Above 25 days holiday
Unfortunately in R&D, GSK do not have a graduate scheme and do not employ you until you have a PhD, but if I wanted to move into another area of the company I'm sure there'd be a greater opportunity than if I hadn't worked for them at all.
The Culture
There were often parties and nights out with the other students at weekends as there were so many other students working at the same site
The rent in Stevenage was about average, not overly expensive but about equivalent to other places. Socialising was an equivalent too, not more expensive than anywhere else.
There were some nice bars and pubs, but the clubs could have done with some work!
There were sporting events and clubs that took place outside of work.
