The Role
I thoroughly enjoyed my year at BASF, it was a great experience and I am very glad I got the opportunity to undertake an internship at such a good company. Enjoyed working with all my colleagues here and would fully recommend this placement and company to anybody.
I always felt very valued at BASF, we were given real work that was going to make a difference in the company. We were always trusted with tasks full time employees were also trusted with, this made me feel like a proper employee rather than just a temporary member of staff.
We sat in a team together in the office and I always felt I could ask my manager a question quickly and get an answer or help to whatever I needed. He was very approachable and always gave good advice and guidance.
How busy I was changed dependent on the time of the month, we were very busy towards the end with monthly reporting. The rest of the month was then dedicated to project work and was therefore dependent on how many projects we had on at that time. I always had work to do however.
I was given a big amount of responsibility as the work I completed both on my own and within the team was sent out to high levels of management. My manager was also very trustworthy of us and allowed us to complete the work without checking up on us regularly.
I have gained vital research skills over the past year, these will help me massively in my final year of study. I learnt what is a good source to use and what is not. I have also gained good people and communication skills through networking and also delivering presentations. I feel I have grown as a person over the last year, something that will help me massively in my final year of university and also in further life looking towards graduate schemes.
The Company
Everybody was very friendly and welcoming. The office is very big so there is always people around giving it a buzz.
There was a good handover period between myself and the other new interns and the old existing interns. This made sure I fully understood my role before being left to complete work alone.
My manager was always available and willing to teach us anything we did not understand. He also managed to set up days within other departments so we could get a broader understanding of different sections of the organisation.
Flexi Time
Subsidised Canteen
Sports and Social Club
Subsidised/Company Gym
Unfortunately there is not currently a graduate scheme at BASF however there are direct entry roles that I could apply for. I would definitely apply for these roles in the future if they interested me and fit in with my career path.
The Culture
There is a big group of students and apprentices all of similar age allowing you to organise nights out or make plans for the weekend quite often.
Manchester has a fairly cheap student area that is not too far from BASF, you can travel by bus, car or train to work quite easily.
Manchester has a good social scene with plenty going on.
There were activities organised by the sport and social club that anybody can get involved with such as Zumba, weekly runs and 5-a-side.
