The Role
It was a challenging job at first having to learn new skills and adapt to a new environment with a 9-5 routine. However, you get used to it quickly and find what your strengths and weaknesses are. It did not take long to feel comfortable in the team and to really enjoy the project I was doing,
I was very lucky to have such a welcoming and approachable team
My supervisor was very approachable and always there to help and offer guidance whenever I had issues or was struggling during the project
There were times where I felt stressed but this was rare and the majority of the time, I was happy with the workload.
As a placement student, I had to learn several techniques and needed to feel comfortable working in the lab before I was given the responsibility of handling my project without too much assistance. I never felt like I was given too much help, and at the same time, never felt like I was left to make too many decisions independently without guidance.
I matured a lot during my placement year and not only gained a lot of experience in the laboratory, learning new techniques, but it improved my confidence and interpersonal skills significantly
The Company
We had many laughs and got along incredibly well, but werent distracted from work and being focussed.
It had a clear structure and was very organised. I never felt like I didn't understand the aims of the project
I felt valued as part of the team I worked in, and always felt appreciated as a student
Sports and Social Club
Company Parties/Events
Staff Sales/Staff Shop
Above 25 days holiday
GSK would be a fantastic company to work for
The Culture
There were over 100 students on placement so I made many new friends who I have kept in contact with and there were many house parties and socials during the year
Considering we were based close to London, rent was reasonable
There were several pubs and bars but the clubs weren't very appealing. I have always believed that it's the company that makes the night, not the venue!
I joined a hockey and running club for the duration of the year
