    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I honestly really enjoyed my experience here. The people that I worked with on my desk were really great and made my time not just worth while but fun.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • The manager on my desk made sure that we had meetings every week to update me on my progress and how I can further develop. Also, even though I was only with my team for 7 weeks, I was encouraged to take part in the weekly meetings that they had with the other teams in America, accompany them to team dinners and staff meetings.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My manager's were really supportive guy's. Right from the beginning they made sure that I would be able to learn and understand what they did on the desks, the different systems they used and other teams that they interact with. I was free to ask questions and do tasks myself, which of course they showed me how to do first. The academy manager himself was helpful. He helped us organise meetings with other staff in the banks so as to understand the many different roles and opportunities available to us.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • In the first 2/3 week I was not very busy. This was because I did not yet have access to any of the systems that I needed to actually do work. This meant that I tended to have a lot of free time on my hands. But I took this time to network my way around the bank, setting up meetings with, for example, someone in investment banking or I&TS. I also did a lot t of shadowing in this time with my team and those not on my desk. However, what did help was that the academy provided up with tasks to complete every week which were actually fun. When I did eventually get access to my systems was when the work started to pile in which was very good as I now had more work to do and could put in all that knowledge from shadowing into practice.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • A lot. I was given the task to complete the processing of termination documents on the structured derivatives documentation desk. This involved me working with a number of different systems to collate information which I then had to send over to the traders for approval.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • The experience that I got and skills that I developed whilst on my internship are going to be really helpful. This is not just the case for when I start looking for a job when I graduate, as I have working at a top bank on my CV. But, the fact that I have been exposed to the industry has allowed me to understand that their is so much more that I can go into and so many ways in which I have developed as a person that will, i.e. help me when doing presentations at university.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The working environment was very very nice and welcoming. People get along and are willing to help.

    5/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • 2/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • Something that really helped was a workshop that we had in the Old Victoria theatre in London. It helped many of the academy students and interns develop on our presentation skills and push us to be better.

    5/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Subsidised Canteen

    3/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I would definitely want to work in RBC in the future as from what I have experienced and heard from others, it is an organisation with a focus on assisting in the development of its own employees.

    5/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • 4/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • 2/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • The current location of RBC is very good in terms of the fact that you are not very far away from being able to have a good night out. There are many bars and restaurants near the area as well as museums and theatres that you can pop down to after work. This is especially the case because just across the Thames is south bank which is known to have good places to go to when one is trying to have a good night out.

    3/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There were about 2/3 different activities which the academy were able to take part in including a workshop at the Old Vic and an iPad led treasure hunt. We were mixed with other RBC interns so gave a really good opportunity to socialise and mix with others who we wouldn't have had the chance to connect with beforehand.
