The Role
The internship was a great experience and well organised. Coming into the sector with no knowledge at all, I managed to develop my skills and have a great insight of the banking industry.
My colleagues were very nice and helpful. They constantly gave me enough work to keep me going throughout the day with clear instructions, and offered to help when I was struggling with the material.
I was given quite a lot of support and guidance, especially at the beginning of the internship when I was unfamiliar with the industry and how things operated.
When I first started my internship, I was put on a large project, plus this summer was extraordinary busy so I was working very long hours during the day.
I was given quite a lot of responsibility as some of the materials I produced and emails I sent were directly to clients.
I learned quite a lot on how to manage my time efficiently as multitasking was required. In addition, the knowledge I learned has been quite helpful to my banking and finance paper I am taking in third year.
The Company
People in RBC were overall very friendly, even the MDs and head were close to approach. The atmosphere was quite intense though as everyone had a lot on their hands.
In general it was quite well organised, although it would have been better if during training week we were given more knowledge on the general industry and what each sector was doing to get a better overview.
The company spent a week giving us training on the basics and accounting, and there were talks given by different sectors throughout the internship.
Subsidised Canteen
IBD is quite a tough sector to get involved in, but the rewards are indeed quite appealing.
The Culture
My team was quite social so I managed to interact with most of my colleagues. In terms of the interns, we would usually go out together to grab lunch/dinner.
Living costs are quite expensive in London. Mostly we would be socialising with people on our own floor, as we spend 15+ hours per day with them.
The interns in general did not go out much as we were all quite tired from a day of work and many had to work during the weekends.
The company arranged a few activities such as the treasure hunt and some acting performance which was quite fun.
