The Role
In the working atmosphere that TJX Europe encourages it is very hard not to enjoy the placement. TJX is a great place to start your career by getting your first taste of working in a professional environment and I have developed my skills and employability a lot as a result of working here.
From day one I was given a lot of responsibility and the amount of assistance I was given slowly decreased as the year went on. This is massive for your confidence as it shows that the business and your colleagues trust you to do the job. My favourite thing about TJX was that they lived up to there values and were committed to creating a positive working environment.
The level of support given by my manager was tailored well to how confident I was in completing the task that I was completing. Management styles always differ and take time to adjust to in a professional environment and once I had worked with my manager for a few weeks I really felt that the support I was given helped me to maximise my potential.
How busy I was depended on the time of month/ year. Working in a finance team you will of course be busier at month end and budget time than on a regular week. Luckily, when we did have quieter weeks it gave me the chance to complete tasks contributing to the longer term goals of my team, for example looking at speeding up and automating existing processes.
I was given responsibility from an early stage as I was given a business partner in my first week. I was assisted well in my first few weeks to help me understand the role but the levels of support were phased out so that I felt in control of my function after a couple of months.
The skills I will use going forward will be centred around the work ethic that I have developed in a 9-5 role and the confidence that I have gained from being given responsibility in a real world scenario. All the skills that I have developed will help me going forward and not just in the final year of my study, although I have definitely learned that I need to appreciate the lie ins!
The Company
The atmosphere, as stated through out the application process, was friendly but professional. At TJX they have a fantastic open door policy all the way up to the president which makes you feel very relaxed in approaching senior members. There were team days arranged quarterly to encourage relationship building as well which helped especially early on.
Despite not being a long running placement scheme the whole year felt very well run.
The company invested a lot of time and money investing in placements as well as graduates which made me feel as though they didn't just see me as someone who was just going to turn up for the year but instead that they wanted this to be the start of a long career at TJX. I went to around 5 organised workshops as well as working in stores for three days to understand the ethos of the company.

Very appealing. The company atmosphere is the main reason for this, the hours are reasonable and the people are friendly - this is a company I want to be a part of going forward. The graduate role here appeals to me, giving a good mixture of time to learn/ study for CIMA qualification as well as playing a significant role in the business.
The Culture
Yes especially at first, however it did become harder as the year went on as a lot of people were studying or didn't live in Watford.
The cost of both was very reasonable bearing in mind how close to London you are. The room that I rented had bills included, a garden and parking for the same price that I paid for my University accommodation. There are lots of bars so prices stay competitive as well, especially compared to London.
Lots of bars around for drinks after work but for those who don't enjoy a night out in Pryzm (I don't know who wouldn't either?!) London is only 20 minutes away on the train. The only problem is trying to get back can become quite expensive if you're not in a group.
Not a huge amount, there were a few society type groups but not many. I was lucky to find a 7-a-side football set up that ran twice a week but you had to get in quickly as there were not many spaces and a lot of demand. There may have been more opportunities I just may not have heard about them!
