About You
The day at BDO provided a great ‘insight’ into life at the company and helped us to understand more about what a career in accountancy involves. I found the day to be really informative and useful. The day also provided useful hints and tips for the recruitment process and what to expect. Everyone was welcoming and friendly; overall it was a very enjoyable day.
I felt valued throughout the day. Employees made a conscious effort to make sure everyone was included from start to finish. Everyone was encouraged to thoughts in the group exercises and all ideas were taken into account. Employees and graduates took time out of their busy schedules to speak with us.
All employees and graduates at BDO were extremely welcoming and friendly. Upon arrival, we were greeted with a warm welcome and we were guided where to go and what to do next. Employees were patient and encouraging throughout the day and were happy to answer all the many questions that we had.
I definitely had the chance to improve my communication and networking skills throughout the day, and such skills will benefit me in whatever I choose to do in the future. I also gained a greater insight in accountancy and the information about the application process will benefit me when applying for future roles.
The Company
The insight day was extremely well structured and followed a carefully arranged timetable. I was provided with this timetable in advance so was able to prepare myself for the activities. All the activities were tailored for us as university students. Travel was arranged in advance and the process was very smooth – I couldn’t fault it at all.
The general atmosphere at BDO was really enjoyable and due to there being a number of interns also on the day, we formed a nice bond. The atmosphere was very comfortable and enjoyable to be in, especially from a networking perspective. The offices were clean, modern and new. Overall, a great atmosphere.
As the insight was only one day, we did not have specific training, however it was clear to see that BDO had invested a lot of time, money and energy into the programme. The activities were designed for us to develop strong networking and team skills and I felt that I developed new skills in a very short space of time.
There were many networking events, which allowed us to be able to meet graduates and current employees. This was a great experience as we were able to learn about their line of work as well as the culture within their area and the firm as a whole. This was really insightful and gave me a great ‘bigger picture’ view of the firm and how it operates.
Although we were only there for a very short period of time, I felt that I got a good insight into the company's culture.
The content given to us throughout the day was really beneficial in helping me to decide my future career path. Whilst I did really enjoy the day, I realised that I would not particularly be suited in a career in accountancy, but I am glad that I realised this early on. However, the skills developed throughout the day will help me in my future career path and I am glad that I partook in this insight.
Everything Else
I was reimbursed travel expenses and these were paid back to me quickly. Lunch was also included.
There were plenty of opportunities to network and meet employees during my time at BDO. The events arranged during the day were quite formal, however, we had the opportunity for informal networking during lunch.
I really enjoyed the networking events. It was a good chance to meet new and interesting people and find out more about their careers. I used this opportunity to also connect with them on LinkedIn. As we were only there for one day, we did not have any social events, apart for a nice intern lunch.
Although there was nothing specifically mentioned on this, from speaking to employees, I did find out about sports team and charity opportunities available.
I would absolutely this insight to a friend; there really is nothing to lose by doing it. Firstly, it provides a good overview of what a career in accountancy involves. Secondly, you get to develop new and existing skills such as communication, networking and data analysis. Finally, it provided many great tips and pointers for applying for future opportunities at BDO.
