The Role
I really enjoyed my placement. I learnt a lot and was able to put my knowledge and skills into practice every day.
I felt extremely valued by my colleagues. I was given lots of responsibility and was always busy. There were also several team social activities. It was a great atmosphere!
If I needed assistance there were several members of the team able to support me.
I was always occupied with tasks and was able to take on as much as I wanted to.
I would say for the level I was at (Second year Civil Engineering student) and as it was my first placement on site, I was given a fairly large amount of responsibility. I had as much responsibility as I would expect to be given at this stage in my career.
The placement was really helpful in that respect. Some of the skills I developed were my surveying and setting out skills, my studying of materials from university (such as concrete) and my knowledge of contracting. These are all relevant to my degree and future career
The Company
The atmosphere was a work hard-play hard environment. Everyone completed work to the best of their ability and got the job done but we also had a very enjoyable time too!
The placement was very well organised. My line manager was fully aware of my arrival and made sure I was given tasks and one of the site engineers was responsible for me. I was given a laptop from central office to use for the duration of the placement. In addition there was a 6 week early talent programme organised for all placement students on jobs across the UK.
If I had been on a longer placement I would have gone on training and development courses. However, I had as much development on site as possible in terms of skills.

I hope to get a summer placement with LOR for next summer. Further on from that I would love to get on there graduate programme.
The Culture
The social scene was great! Everyone was very friendly and we partook in social events and activities such as weekly five aside football sessions too.
I commuted from home (50 minute drive each way) hence the cost of living was reduced. Furthermore, there was a financial contribution towards living and transport costs which more than covered the cost of petrol for me. Socialising in the area was priced as you would expect.
I was working in Brighton so the nightlife options were fantastic.
Yes there were the aforementioned social events.
