The Role
I thoroughly enjoyed my placement year at DHL Supply Chain. The work was varied, exciting and interesting. I knew little about the industry before I started work at DHL, and came out with a new wealth of knowledge. There were times when the work was challenging and I had to work outside my comfort zone, but I feel that this has made me a better and more well rounded individual.
On the whole I felt that I was completely valued by my colleagues. They would listen to what I had to say and would always respect my opinion. There were occasions where I felt that I wasn’t being fully listened to or valued, but that is just part and parcel of working life!
I had a supportive line manager who had an open-door policy. This was great as I had some issues along the way and he was incredibly supportive. I also had a great office who would always look out for me. My line manager provided really insightful and useful guidance at the end of my placement as well.
It varied from week to week. Some weeks would be really busy, and I would stay and work late. I didn’t mind doing this, as this again is part of working as an industrial placement student! I was very proactive as well, so if I had did have some spare time I would go out and ask for work from my team members.
I was given a lot of responsibility, which was fantastic. I became the subject matter expert in one particular area for DHL. This provided me with a lot of responsibly and gave me access to a fantastic network of people. It was daunting at times, but I had support networks in place to help me through tough times.
I think it will be of great help. My communication skills, teamwork skills, leadership skills and problem solving will really help in my studies and beyond. In particular my verbal skills, as I conducted a lot of training and did a large amount of public speaking. This will help in the future I am sure.
The Company
The office I was in had a lot of senior people from a variety of fields. The people in the office as a result were often incredibly busy and it was sometimes a little bit quiet. However, throughout the year it because a bit livelier and by the end it was a really enjoyable place to come and work.
It was very well organised I would say. I knew when my start date was well in advance and I had an induction day well in advance of me starting. The year itself was fairly well organised, sometimes I would have to ask my line manager to complete a few things or ask him if there was anything I needed to be completing. But on the whole it was well organised.
I think it is tricky for a company to invest heavily in placement students as they are only their for a year. However, DHL did invest in perusal training and development, and I ended up completing 2 training modules which was really enjoyable. There was lots of online trainings that you could do as well.

I think that they are very appealing as a future employer. I would be very interested to see what sort of roles they would have available. Being the largest and most innovative logistics and supply chain company in the world, it would be a great opportunity to work for DHL in the future.

I actually lived at home for my placement, so I got a very good deal on rent. In terms of socialising, the midlands is fairly reasonable when it comes to socialising and living. From speaking to graduates who lived near where I worked, the cost of living was oaky but socialising was fairly cheap.
I often went out in Leamington/Coventry/Birmingham. Birmingham and Leamington were good nights out with lots of lively bars and good clubs. Coventry is Coventry! Its fairly cheap, has one major club and that is about it! It all depends what you are into though, I enjoy going out but am not mad keen for it all the time.
There was some opportunities yes. I completed a Tough Mudder assault course with a number of people from DHL which was really great! We had a lot of fun and was nice to see people outside of work. There were often emails and flyers going around about events, but I didn't go to many due to other commitments.
