The Role
I really enjoyed my placement year with DHL, at first it was difficult, working out the right level of work that would challenge me, but through some changes we managed to come up with an environment which I thrived in. The training provided was of a really good quality and made me really look forward to the next training modules. I would only give 8/10 because of the rough start, but after that it was plain sailing.
I found that my colleagues at work really valued by contributions and even looked towards me for guidance at times! I was always made to feel welcome and part of the team. This was definitely evident when they asked me to stay on throughout the following summer. I was always involved in process changes and decision making as well.
I'm going to give this one a 5/10. My manager whilst on placement was absolutely brilliant, he was great to get along with and sorted out any issues I had. However, it did seem as though he/ the site was not completely clued up on the whole placement process. It seemed as though any placement things that were happening had to come through me and I had to instigate them otherwise they wouldn't happen e.g. 1 to 1's. As for guidance, he was a great help and provided me with any training/ information on the job as i needed
I've gone for 7/10 for this because I felt that again the rough start was a factor. I was not given much challenging work to do and this caused some stagnation in my personal development. After a few changes though and The workload seemed very balanced, there was never a time where I felt like I was overloaded and couldn't cope, whilst at the same time, there was always something that needed to be worked on or improved.
I feel that an 8 would be appropriate for this question as whilst I was not given official rank and responsibilities, I feel that I had a sort of unofficial responsibility for certain things and definitely took full control of some of the key work that needed to be done. This was absolutely fine with my colleagues and I felt that I did a good job in handling the work and responsibilities. In my eyes at least i was "running the show!"
Absolutely ten out of ten on this one. The training we received a a placement group was absolutely first class and will be extremely useful for future job roles especially the management and leadership training. The on the job skills I learnt were also invaluable. I already feel as though I am putting them to good use in my daily life and already whilst back at uni. Whilst they may not directly help my degree, they will definitely give me the best platform to work from.
The Company
This is going to be a contrasting answer so I feel that 7/10 is fair. I did a stint in a generic office, computers, desks ect. but the majority of my work was in the warehouse on the shop floor. The office felt fairly dry, most people just kept head down in their computer and it didn't feel as though it was a fun atmosphere. However, in the warehouse it was a much different story, there was a lot of talking to people, a lot of banter and generally a good atmosphere to be in.
I'm going to keep this at a five. I feel that the training modules were very well organised as well as the assessment days and any other training where we had to get together as a group. However, as I said in a previous question, I think that the site was not 100% clued up on what I was there for and I had to push a lot of it to them. I also felt quite disconnected from the central set up team, there was not too much contact throughout the year, perhaps there could have been a monthly call with them or something along those lines to check in, see how we are doing.
I'm going to give this on an 8/10. They did put on some absolutely quality training modules for leadership and management, however, I feel that there should have been more training modules overall, perhaps there should have been another 2/3 modules that could have really shown that they are training us from the start to be a big thing within DHL supply chain, not just leave it all for the grad scheme.
I'm going to give this a middle of the road 6. I am not entirely decided on my future yet and because my degree is slightly different to the work that DHL supply chain do, i'm not sure if we will be able to match the two together. I will say though if they can prove that the perks will be better and a clear pathway to high level management is available then I will defiantly consider it.
The Culture
I'm giving this one a seven out of ten. I have only knocked the 3 marks off because of how spread out we all were. There were 10 of us on the scheme and we were mostly scattered across the country so would have been difficult to get together. however we had a Facebook group and I stayed in touch with a few people from the scheme.
I'm going to have to give this a 5. I worked on the outskirts of Birmingham, but never actually ventured into the city. I decided not to relocate and commuted everyday (about an hour each way) so I think I can't really answer this question. I do know the placement students in London were very much struggling with the money and it didn't feel that the company were supporting them as much as they could have
Again the same as the previous question so I will give it a five again, I never went into Birmingham and am not really the nightlife kind of person so I can't really answer this question. I will say that the London group did seem to have good nightlife at their disposal.
I'm afraid I will have to give this one a two. There was a small charity team on my site that did a few small things throughout the year but there were no sports teams (something I was looking forward to). I have my own football team that I am part of and my work did not get in the way of that so any activities you will need to find yourself. I guess it depends on the site you are at.
