The Role
I really enjoyed my internship. I was based in Canary Wharf, London as so developed an understanding into the corporate world. It was a huge learning curve, and the building itself was quite daunting at first. However, I had an extremely supportive team that helped me reach my potential.
I felt that all those in my department genuinely cared about my well being and also they wanted to make sure that I felt valued. I was given work and responsibility from day 1, whilst this was challenging, there was always someone near at hand to help me if I felt confused or overwhelmed. I even celebrated my 21st birthday during the internship, to which my team got me a birthday cake. I felt very much part of the team.
I was given a lot of guidance throughout the internship however, I was also left to my own devices in that I was given responsibility and the freedom to do the work in a way that I chose. With this, whilst I felt supported, I was also encouraged to take initiative and go out on my own to achieve my own results.
I was very busy day to day because when there was little work to do in the team I was in, I focused on the project that was set to us on the first day. Any 'down time' that I had, I spent working on that and so I found that I was always busy.
I was given a lot of responsibility during the internship. This included leading training calls to other branches, drafting emails, making calls and completing forms.
The skills I developed will definitely help me in my studies and my future career. The internship secured a graduate job however I took a lot more from my internship than just the grad job security. I learnt a lot about communication skills, the importance of it and also basic skills such as how to draft emails, how to create powerpoint and presenting were all developed during the internship. These are skills that have allowed me to gain confidence, confidence that I will use during future events and jobs.
The Company
The office was quite lively, with colleagues chatting to one another from time to time, laughing at a joke or so on. It was very easy to chat with anyone in the office because the office worked on 'hot desking' so each day everyone would sit at a different desk. This encouraged communication amongst people and created a friendly atmosphere.
The internship was well organised. We rotated weekly into different teams, with work being readily available thus allowing us to gain valuable experiences in each team. The overall set up was well orchestrated, we had enough time to learn about new things in each team, and we had regular meetings set up to ensure we felt supported.
The company invested hugely in me as they have offered me a graduate role. I also received online training on personal development, cyber security skills and awareness and many other online courses. I also learnt a lot from senior staff, who allowed me to shadow them and chat to them about their careers.
Company Parties/Events
I got a job with them so I feel that future employment prospects are extremely appealing. I am delighted that I got a job offer with the firm. I am excited to become a full time, permanent employee and get started into challenging projects.
The Culture
Yes. Myself and my fellow intern got on very well. We also got on very well with the current graduates, who we went out for lunch and drinks with regularly. We have agreed to keep in contact and so with that I would argue that there was a very good social scene amongst the interns and colleagues.
Quite expensive, I ate out for lunch everyday in Canary Wharf and so I did spend a lot on living and socialising. I had to get a train and a tube every day which also cost me quite a lot.
I didn't really go out in Canary Wharf as it is mainly a day time area and very quiet on weekends, I did however go out in london which has a great nightlife.
No there were not many things I could have gotten involved with but this is only because I was only there for 4 weeks and so all projects had either not started yet or lasted longer than 4 weeks. EY do offer lots of societies and networks however, e.g. free tickets to Art Museums and Golf societies etc.
