The Role
My time at EY was really interesting, I learnt an enormous amount not only about the firm as a whole but audit as a career path. It was a great length as well which enabled me to get settled in my team as well as enjoy my summer holidays from university.
I was really lucky to be placed with a great team who were unbelievably happy to help the entire time. Being the low season most people did not have arduous workloads and so had the time to sit and answer my questions – of which there were a lot! I hope to be working with them next year full time.
Again this is similar to the above question / answer. My team were very helpful and always there. The overall intern programme is structured very well with a good support network of people who are independent and / or not involved in the team you are working with. This means they are impartial and a great place to ask the more silly questions.
This really depended on what was happening in the office and there were certainly days where not much was going on. Responsibility for finding tasks to do is put firmly on your shoulders as an intern which means your whole internship experience is very much down to you as well!
Again this is similar to the above question, if you push for more responsibility and you show you are reliable enough to take it then people are happy to give it to you. This is helped by it being low season and so everyone is under less pressure time wise.
My degree programme and accounting couldn’t be further apart so in terms of actual overlap there was none. What I would say however is that this really doesn’t matter as it’s the skills you learn both on your degree and your internship that complement each other, as for the difficult acronyms and words used in the office you get used to them very quickly.
The Company
We went out for lunch a few times and had after work drinks with other interns which were fun. As for the atmosphere inside the office, the best thing about it was the ability to ask and answer questions regardless of rank from partner to interview. I even had people asking me how to do things by the end!
There was a great team of people behind the intern programme who ran it very well. We had a welcome day for the entire intake on our first day but they were always available to contact through the business Skype function. However in terms of having work that was very much left down to you and your supervisors / managers.
We had weekly webinars (which are basically like a lecture but on Skype so the whole intern intake can tune in) which were really insightful. Additionally we had access to the company’s online learning site where you could literally pick any topic you wanted and read / learn / be taught about it.

The Culture
Again this was left up to us as interns and as a result it only really happened twice over the six weeks. The main problem is that everyone gets posted to client sites immediately which means you haven’t had a chance to meet any of the other interns properly. I’d rather have done that though than have sat in the office for 6 weeks!
