The Role
Overall I really enjoyed my placement at Verizon - there was a great team environment and the work was set out very clearly.
I was always praised for the hard work that I did in the job - making me feel very valued by the team.
I was given a lot of support by my team. I was given both a buddy and mentor, who were there daily to help and support with all elements of my job.
The placement started quite slowly, this was due to my lack of knowledge of the industry. However in the second half of the year I was very busy.
I was given a lot of responsibility by the end of my placement, working with high value orders. This also made me feel value and important to the team. Often someone depended on me to complete a specific task in order for them to continue their work.
The skills I developed will be very important in regards to my degree and after. I was able to put theory I have learnt at university into practice, and also to apply my skills to a work place which has helped me to improve them. This will be very useful when applying for jobs in the future.
The Company
There is a big work from home culture at Verizon - therefore the office could often be very quiet. However this was not always the case, and I regularly attended meetings in the London offices.
At the beginning of the placement I felt a little underwhelmed, this may be due to the set up.
There were many many opportunities to take part in training and development schemes. It was encouraged that we attended as many as possible.
Financial Bonus
Working from home
I will definitely be interested in working at Verizon again one day in the future.
The Culture
There were a group of interns and graduates at Verizon, which meant that there was a social scene between everyone. My team also worked from London from time to time which also provided a good social scene after work.
The cost of living is very high in Reading in regards to the rent. However the cost of socialising was no more than most towns/citys in the UK.
The nightlife in Reading is ok. There are a few nice restaurants and bars.
I did not find many other opportunities that I could get involved in, however I did not go out of my way to find any.
