The Role
I very much enjoyed the summer internship at Nomura and I found the programme to be very beneficial in terms of personal development. I was able to get a much better understanding of the financial sector and investment banking. Furthermore, this programme is a fantastic networking opportunity and I had the chance to meet lots of new people.
I felt that I was highly valued by my team members and had the opportunity to work with colleagues across all levels. I was encouraged to share my thoughts and opinions, and I was working on meaningful projects and tasks. I was a respected member of my team and was able to build strong relationships with fellow colleagues.
There was a good support system in place at Nomura. Upon arrival at the bank, I was appointed with a mentor and a buddy. I was able to turn to my buddy when I had questions. My mentor helped me focus on my personal development. Additionally, my line manager always set aside time each week to review my work and answer questions.
I was consistently busy throughout the placement and I enjoyed this, as the slower days were less enjoyable! I had several different projects that I was supporting on, as well as completing ad hoc work for my team. When I had quieter moments, I would use this time to network with other departments.
I was grated a lot of responsibility on this summer programme. As I was treated like any other member of the team, I had my own projects to oversee and I was able to manage my own diary and meetings etc. My team fully trusted me with high level work and I enjoyed the responsibility that I was given.
The skills that I developed on this internship will 100% benefit me in my studies and future career path. I developed a number of key transferable skills included communication and presentation skills. These skills will be needed in any career going forward. I have become a more adaptable and dynamic individual- the internship also greatly improved my confidence.
The Company
The general atmosphere was great! I had expected it to be quite serious and intimidating, however it was really quite the opposite. I found all Nomura employees to be friendly and colleagues seemed to have a genuine bond. I felt comfortable approaching employees to ask questions. In addition, the offices are very nice and modern, so it was a great environment to be in for 10 weeks!
I found the summer placement to be extremely well structured and organised. The HR team went out of their way to ensure that I was working in the department of my choice. There was a good induction session during the first week and there were training sessions organised throughout the placement.
Before joining the firm, I was required to complete a number of online training sessions, which I found to be very beneficial once I joined Nomura. During the first week, we received corporate finance training, which was also extremely useful. Throughout the 10 weeks, there were various online training sessions we could complete.

There are lots of future opportunities at Nomura. The Summer Internship is a direct route onto the graduate programme and if you are willing to work hard, there is a good chance you will be offered a place on the programme. Early on in the internship, Nomura highlights the areas where they are hiring.
The Culture
There is a really great social scene amongst the interns at Nomura. Every Thursday evening, the roof top terrace bar is open and we would socialise up there. This also gave the opportunity to meet new people and network, The HR team also organises a number of socials events for the interns.
The bank is based in Central London, so the cost of living is very high. However, the salary provided is very generous and this more than covers rent, travel and socialising. Once you get used to the area, you can find bars that provide good happy hour deals to make drinks more affordable.
There are endless bar, restaurants and pubs in the area so there is always somewhere new to go!
There are lots of opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work! There are lots of volunteering opportunities and I personally got involved in an employability workshop, whereby we helped job seekers with their CVs and interview skills. There are also a number of sport teams that you can get involved in.
