The Role
Internship was enjoyable since we had lots of opportunities to socialise with the other summer interns. The first week was all inductions so we got to know eachother well. The company also arranged a few events during the internship, e.g. drinks, a ball, bar tabs..etc
Depends what sort of people are on your team. Mine weren't very welcoming and decided not to give many interesting work to me. It did feel like some of the colleagues looked down on summer interns and did not take them seriously.
We had a counsellor and a buddy. Buddy had recently done graduate programme and was fairy nice, but didn't get very involved in providing work. Counsellor was useful for regular meetings to discuss feedback, but didn't give honest opinions. NOTE: the counsellor is (normally) the one who decides if you get an offer or not, but is also the one supposed to provide you with feedback and supoort throughout - there is a conflict of interest and the meetings can be awkward. You are told at the start by various managers and support people - if you have any problems, don't hesitate to contact me. NOTE: some of them will help, some of them are just saying it to sound nice and are actually too busy/don't care.
Not very busy, but I was able to seek more work from different teams. They explained it was a quiet time of year. You have to speak up a lot to get more work, else they are happy to let you sit around and do nothing literally! (although this could be used against you later on)
All work involves "drafting, checking, pre drafts" ...etc. Went to a few meetings but was told not to say anything just listen and make notes if I want.
Team working skills, report writing, spreadsheet skills all come in useful in degree, and a future job. Also developed some technical skills e.g. Bloomberg, VBA, R, due to work for specific team. I felt that the whole experience made me a lot more confident too, which was the biggest gain.
The Company
office is huge, everyone is approachable. open planned office so you can walk around and see what everyone is doing. you don't have to sit in same place each day. great view of thames/tower bridge. donuts were brought in and placed all over the place every friday.
very well planned - first week was arranged with military precision.the events organized during it were emailed around a few days before. one thing they did not check, is if the teams actually needed interns
you could do a lot of online learning in your 'downtime' but most the stuff is common sense or available freely online, so you don't want to waste your short internship doing it.
Company Parties/Events
They offered me a job.
The Culture
Very good.
there is a cheap bar with happy hour all evening every day, just a few minutes away. there are other much nicer bars/restaurants on the south bank but more expensive, worth checking out though
You need to travel a little for 15-20 mins tube to reach all the best places in london.
Apparently when you join as a grad there are a lot more.
