The Role
I really enjoyed my internship this summer at EY. I was unsure of what to expect and apprehensive as I'd never spent time at such a large firm before but everyone there was really friendly and welcoming. I learnt so much over the 6 weeks and made some really good friends.
Although I had no experience in the department I was placed in it felt great that I was trusted with important client work and didn't just spend my days doing filing and photocopying which I initially thought I may do. I got really good feedback on the work I completed and it was nice to know my input was valued.
My supervisor was great, he was really helpful and answered all my questioned without being patronising.
On most days I had a few things going on and I was given something new to work on every other day or so, so I was always fairly busy. On the odd occasion when I wasn't very busy I would read up on news related to the work my team was doing and watch parliamentary debates and write a short summary on my findings to be shared with the team to keep them up to date.
During my placement I was given a fair amount of responsibility, however any work I completed was checked over by a more senior member of the team. I appreciated this as although I did my best with the work I was given I was not completely familiar with the sector I was in so it was reassuring knowing that even if I made a mistake it would be rectified before anything went to the client.
Studying for a degree in economics meant that I was familiar with some of the terms I came across during my placement, however I was surprised that most of the work I was doing was fairly unrelated to my degree. I did learn more about tax and also spent time on excel which should help me with university work this year. I also gained time management skills, important for not only my time at university but beyond that also.
The Company
The atmosphere in the office was a lot livelier and fun than I had expected it to be. The office was open plan which made a huge difference as you could chat to people really easily and for me it meant there was always someone I could ask for help when I needed it. Although there was a lot of fun and laughter, it didn't make it hard to concentrate on my work - in fact it meant that I was less likely to get bored!
The internship was fairly well set up and nothing went too wrong however most interns felt like there should have been more social events organised so that we could get to know each other a bit better as other than one event on the very last day nothing was organised so I only really spent time with the other intern on my team.
There was some training in terms of online courses we had to complete as well as internal training specific to my team organised by my partner.
Company Parties/Events
I very much enjoyed my time at EY and could definitely see myself working at the firm in the future. The company feels really young and I believe that I fitted in well with my team as well as other people I met while working there. The people are friendly and welcoming and I had a lot more fun than I expected to.
The Culture
I went out with my team for drinks at least once a week even if it was only a few of us which was really fun as it was good to get to know them outside of work. However like most other interns I felt that the firm could have done more to organise events for us to meet each other as there was only one event on the last day which although was fun it would have been better if it had taken place earlier during the internship.
As I live in London anyway I stayed with my parents, however travel came to around £250 for the 6 weeks and I ended up spending a fair amount of money on food at lunch.
The nightlife was amazing in the area. The office is based at London Bridge so there were tonnes of bars and pubs just a few minutes away. It was also really easy to get to clubs via London Bridge station and it was also really easy to get home after a night out.
There were opportunities to join sports teams and other societies however I did not as I felt most of the sports teams were fairly male dominated.
